So I bought a brand new Sig P238 HD... When I got it home I field stripped it for a quick inspection before heading to the range. To my surprise either the recoil spring is severely rusted or they put some kind of orange paint or something on it. When I look at it closely it almost looks like some kind of half *** coating but I'm not sure. It doesn't act like rust when I tried to wipe it off with some gun oil. Any one out there know anything about this??? Here are a couple pictures

It is not uncommon for Sig to color their recoil springs in order to tell them apart. Take a look http://store.sigsauer.com/parts-kit-p238-380acp.html

OMG that is a half-assed job! Send that picture to Sig customer service and maybe you can score a free replacement. So I bought a brand new Sig P238 HD... Yeah, that doesn't look right. I'm not saying it's necessarily harmful to the spring, but give them a call/email and ask them what the deal is.

If you get a CS rep that don't know anything about color coding that rep might sent you a new spring. Now you know what that rusty looking paint is.The wise man said just find your place

Mine had the same thing on it, but not to that extent. It looks like some sort of paint, and not rust. Unfortunate choice of color, that. I figured the spring was still springy, so it's good to go.Comment

It's most likely paint. All their recoil springs are color coded. For future reference the painted end goes on the guide rod first. If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

Thank you everyone. I scrapped some off with my knife (should have thought of it sooner) and yes it seems to be paint. Stress over a rusty spring in a new gun averted.Comment
