    Shield Troubles

I bought my wife a new carry piece for her birthday, a M&P Shield.

We are experiencing a problem with the 7 round mag that came with the package. While at a skills class yesterday, the 7 round mag consistently would not lock the slide open after the last shot. Additionally, the mag would not drop when the release was depressed. We had no such problem with the 8 round mag.

While cleaning the gun last evening, I did a little inspection. It seems that the 7 round mag has a slightly loose fit when inserted into the mag well. Because of this, the notch on the follower that engages the slide stop makes very minimal contact and ends up next to the stop lever instead of pressing it up to the engaged position. This actually puts a bind on the mag, preventing it from falling when released.

I will give S&W a call in the morning in hopes that they will make it right. But I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem...

Never had an issue with my 7 round mags. I've got 4 and all function just fine.

The only problem I've had with my shield is the after market recoil spring doesn't get the slide into battery consistantly when using the slide release, I always pull back on the slide after charging mags. As an aside, go look at Hyve Technologies. Then make a plus 2 extension for the 8 round mags.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

Does it work properly when you use the FACTORY recoil spring?

Never had a problem with my shield. Mags drop free and the slide locks back on last round with all mags.

I have experienced this problem with my wife's Shield. But, this ONLY happens with a fully loaded magazine. The mag will drop about a half inch and stop. I think the pressure on the mag body is causing it to expand just a smidgen. If it's downloaded by 1 round, it works fine. This happens with both the 7 and 8 round mags.

Otherwise, the Shield has been great!

Have you contacted S&W customer service and explained the problem? They might just send you a replacement magazine.

I'd send the whole thing to them, you may end up with a new gun.

Mine has been 100% perfect, the best mouse gun ever and oh so accurate.

Op it sounds like you know what the issue is and might make it easier to get S&W to help you hopefully.. but like most have said mine works fine but I did have a painfully long break in before it ran right.

                      Thanks for all the replies.

I contacted S&W customer service. I was instructed to return the magazine to them with an explanation of the problem and they would send me a replacement. In the meantime, I need to find another mag locally so mama can carry the thing.

Other than the problem she experienced with the mag, she likes the gun. The recoil kind of startled her at first(she had been carrying/shooting a LCP), but she's over that now. Hopefully, this will be a solidly reliable carry piece for her.

                      Thanks again.
