Aquiring a Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" in CA

Hi I'm moving back to CA from NV due to career path necessities. Since I left several laws have changed and or have been amended to tighten restrictions and close import loopholes. I have a working knowledge of what is legal to own in CA, however obtaining said firearms are another animal all together, so I'm here for help.

If I could have one pistol for home defense SHTF/survival purposes I'd pick a Mauser c96 style pistol (Astra 900 is fine too). 10 round fixed magazine (stripper fed) so the should be perfectly legal to own within CA.

    So here are my questions,
    Can I even buy/register a c96 currently?
Do I have to buy one already in CA?
Can one be imported into CA?
As many if not all are over 50 years old, does Curio/Relic apply?
What is the legality of the stock/holster? (I know its federally exempt if due to age but not 100% on state)

If it's a CA firearm only deal does anyone know a dealer for Mauser c96/Astra 900 pistols? (9mm, 7.63x25, .45 all good, as long as "safe" to fire condition).

Thanks for any help you can provide!

These guns are quite valuable collectors items, and they are also fragile, with very few spare parts available. Many parts are numbered to the gun, so if you break a part your gun will lose a large part of its value.

Do yourself a favor and get a few Hk 45's, and buy a c96 to hang on the wall.

These Broomhandle pistols are neat old guns, but no longer viable for normal use, IMO.

The Mauser is a Curio or Relic. Ask your questions in the C&R section of Calguns. Those people would know more.
Be sure to ask your doctor if depression, rectal bleeding, and suicide are right for you.

There are plenty of Mauser c96 and Astra 900 models available in the 1k range, I'm more concerned with the obtainability & legality.

Thanks I'll post a thread there, wasn't sure what the standing of C&R was in CA or if they even have any real exemptions...

You can buy or bring C96 with you. They are C&R. You cannot attach stock to C96 in California, even having non matching stock may cause legal issues.
There are better SHTF/survival handguns, but to each its own.

So the C&R allows them to be shipped in from another state? (like a single action revolver etc?)

C&R handguns are exempt from the handgun safety roster.

A simple trip to the DOJ website and you would know this.

"Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement."

Its not a secret or anything, right there in black and white.

This is CA we're talking about, they've changed the exemption laws at least twice since I was 100% up to date. Always nice to hear from living, breathing owners than taking the CA DOJ at face value.

Gotcha. In this case it is pretty straight forward. The tricky part is proving something is a C&R and finding an FFL that will DROS it.

The real question is why would you want a c96 for home defense/SHTF lmao.

I believe the last Mauser Broomhandle was made in 1939. Also remember that CA considers versions that take detachable magazines to be assault weapons.
