    Shield 40 for 642/638?

    I'm in a quandary, a month ago I won a S&W Shield in 40 at a FNRA dinner.
It's a nice gun, pretty small and such there's just two problems. I do not like 40S&W and I've already got a Kahr CW9 to fill the 'thin and light auto' niche in my collection.

I have been eying both the S&W 638 and 642 ever since I bought a 638 for my niece earlier this year. I have a bobbed hammer Model 60 that I like and have a ton of accessories for so a 638/642 would essentially be 'plug and play' for me.

But I keep seeing people rave about the Shield and I do like it I just don't like the caliber and I'd have to spend money on a few mods, accessories and a new caliber of ammo.

I'm torn between offering it for trade or keeping it and trying to get to like it.

I would keep it, But I like .40 cal. You can always trade later if you find that you really don't care for it. Just my thoughts.

If you like the 642, then I would sell the Shield and buy a new-production no-lock version: https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearm...-internal-lock

I bought one for pocket carry, and I love it. I put Hogue wood grips on it (https://www.hogueinc.com/store/produ...checkered/1859), installed an Apex Duty/Carry Kit (https://store.apextactical.com/WebDi...Details/192058), put it in a Mika holster (https://mikaspocketholsters.com/product/pocket-holster/), and now it's PERFECT.

        Shield 40 for 642/638?

        I'd trade it. It's not a 9mm Shield.

ETA: Hopeton beat me to it.

I like my Shield 40. The recoil is not nearly as bad as people seem to think. However, if I had to replace it it would probably be with a 9. Once I'm out of here I will probably get the PC Shield 9.

Unfortunately the Shield 40s don't have the resale value around here. So you're looking at getting $400 max. Less if you want to sell it quick.

              I have a shield 40 and think it's a pretty nifty piece.
However I have no qualms about the 642 or 638 either................ 642 being the 1st choice since I personally have little need for a hammer on my snub 38's/.357's
If you like the wheelies better , than go that route.
But if not , than so be it.

I have a 640 and a Shield 9. I tend to like the 640 with +Ps just because it's more reliable in case clothing or something is able to grab the gun. That's just me because I'm paranoid like that.

One evening at an indoor range a young dude was raving about his new Shield 40. He was saying that's power, referencing the very snappy recoil of his gun. Looking at his 5 yard B27 target he's got holes in the 8s and occasional 9/10/X and very low left. He was all over the paper, but he was thrilled by the power of the subcompact gun. To be fair with him another guy with a full size 9mm is shooting worst than him, but his girlfriend is hot and sporting a pair of 36 that's ruining my concentration.

This video have folks with positive inputs on the Shield 40.

The Shield 9 is so popular because it shoots like a bigger gun.
In .40 I don't think it will loose this capability, although recoil may be more brisk.
In 9 the Shield is a compact pistol.
In 40 it is a pocket howitzer.
I like pocket howitzers (Star PD in .45, Taurus PT140 / 145, etc).

                  I have the Shield 9, 442 and 642.
While the wheelies can be shot accurately at distance, the Shield in 9 or 40 is much better for longer distances.

There's a couple reasons to consider .40 as an extra caliber.
First, .40 ammo seems to be available even when there are shortages.
Second, when SHTF, local LE may be your source for ammo and if they are running .40 then you will want at least one .40 gun available to you.

No, that's not a pleasant thought but those will not be pleasant times.

Trade it out, the Kahr is a perfect compact "grab and go" pistol.

The .40 in the shields have a bit of a snap to them, my buddy who carries a shield .40 daily tried my kahr and has recently traded his Shield for a Kahr and took a $100 loss on the deal just to get rid of the shield so to speak.

I myself just went from Kahr to a Ruger LCR in 38 Both are my grab and go

Get the S&W revolver, trade the Shield in my opinion.
