    Fabbing 4506 magazines

Anybody with a 4506 probably knows the unobtanium status of factory S&W magazines. There's a Youtube video on modding 1911 mags and so far I've ordered up some Promags ( ) plus some followers and springs. I have some donor Wilson 47Ds for mag bodies.

Anybody had success with modding/fabbing magazines for this big beast? The lips on Checkmate hybrid mags look identical to the factory 4506 ones.

Can't help you with mods, but the mags do pop up from time to time here and on ebay. In fact, I bought a couple of holsters for my 4566 from a gentleman here on Calguns, and he had 2 mags up for sale for several days before they sold.

When I bought my 4566 last year, I found two factory mags on ebay for relatively cheap.....just gotta keep looking.

Good luck with your mods.....I am interested if it is possible.

I humbly bow before your superior Google-fu style...

However... I know of Numrich and I am disappointed I didn't think of them myself. I've already ordered up a half dozen police turn ins...

OTOH they should be close to unused.

Funny that those Numrich mags have yellow followers.....I thought the black followers were the latest ones.

The two mags that came with my gun had orange followers. I found some black followers on ebay and ordered some new springs from Wolff. The combination of new type springs and followers kept the followers from diving, as the older ones are prone to do.

The ones I ordered "may come with orange, yellow or black followers." I've already got 4 sets of black followers & springs on order. The mags that came with the gun are orange.

Parts are available. The mags were the hard part... until I consulted the Google Masters of Calguns.

I'm constantly on the look out for 1006 Mags, So far I've found 2 at non-stratospheric prices. Brownells has some springs followers for these various old school S&W semi autos. Best of luck.

1006 mags are hard for me to find. 4506 mags can be found for about 25 dollars on eBay. If it interests you, you should contact Terry at Get Loaded in Grand Terrace, he gets them randomly for a guy that has storage containers full of gun stuff. Last time I bought some from him I only bought six but he had 12 total.

The two stock mags that came with my new 4506 and S/W brand one's I've purchased after have yellow followers.

Press down on the front of the follower. It shouldn't "dive", the follower should move down uniformly without rocking or diving.
If it dives, you should probably change the springs and followers.

4506 mags aren't all that expensive I see them all the time one eBay around $25-40 or so. Quality 1911 mags cost that. 10mm S&W mags average $100 though. Buy any 3rd gen parts and mags now before they get even harder to find.

On the models like 5906, 4006, full size mags shouldn't be a problem for a long time as I'm sure there was piles of these mags made for LE use. As for factory 10 round versions though they seem to be getting harder to find.
