Guns, fishing and stuff does in Vacaville. Most people on here don't like them, but I haven't had any problems. If you can make it mon-wed between 12-4 than you get half priced range time. You can't beat $6.

Got a XD-9 myself - love the look and feel of the pistol. Shot over 1000 rds through it with absolutely no problems (stove piping, extraction misses, etc). Never shot the larger calibur brothers of the 9mm. But I've heard great things about the .45 ACP.

Had bought it originally as my CCW weapon due to its lightweight and slender features but there was no decocking of the weapon. Though I never draw with my finger on the trigger, there's always that "what if" factor and I'd hate to accidentally gouge another crack down my *** end, if you know what I mean

So I opted for the Beretta 9000s 40 SW instead - I keep the XD for home defense by the bed.

It's worth going to the range and trying before you buy. Glocks and XD's are both good guns for the price, and the only thing I would consider besides personal preference would be the lower cost accessories if you go with a Glock.

I think 9mm would probably be a good start if you're trying to keep the expenses in check.

I recently went with an XD-40 sub-compact over a Glock 27 because I found I could fit only 2 fingers around the grip of the G27, but I could squeeze my pinky on there to get 3 on the XD. This made it more comfortable for me.

get the XD in 9mm. i have 3 and i love em. have the glock and the 1911 too, but i love the XD's. as money is an issue, be sure and go with 9mm. it is a fine round and cheaper to shoot will some potent defensice rounds availible and will serve you well provided you do your part.

alright so i guess its pretty much settled on the 9mm then. Turns out my buddy just bought one so i can try that soon as he can pick it up.

No dice on the XDm? my cousin IS LE, would it be ok for him to get one into Ca and then transfer it to me? of course this would involve a little hassle on his end but thats what family's good for

I have an XD9 and an XD45. I've also shot the XD40.

I think the final decision about caliber depends upon the intended use.

- 9mm is cheaper to purchase, has less recoil, and good self-defense rounds are available
- .40S&W uses the same pistol frame as the 9mm, has 10+% more power, but is distinctly more expensive and has more recoil (not painful, but not fun like a 9mm)
- .45acp has more stopping power, smoother recoil than .40S&W (the XD45 is the softest-shooting .45 I've ever fired), but is more expensive and the grip is physically larger (slightly, but still distinguishable)

If you trying to decide between 9mm and .40S&W:
- 9mm if you are going to shoot for fun a lot, want cheaper ammo, and are willing to accept a slight decrease in stopping power
- .40S&W if you are going to shoot for fun less, are willing to spend about 25% more on ammo, but want slightly more stopping power for home defense

Personally, if it is your first gun, I think you should get the 9mm. I don't think you loose that much in stopping power if you are willing to drop some $$$ on excellent defense ammo like Federal HST.

As for Glock is better than XD, it is enough bunk that you only need to worry about which feels better to shoot.

The Glock is great because of its proven reliability and mass availability of parts so that you can work on it yourself. But some (including me) hate the grip angle and feel, and find that the gun doesn't point naturally. Others like it. They're great guns, but so is the XD, so don't believe the FUD from anyone that one gun eclipses the other.

Your LE cousin can PPT a Springfield Armory XDm to you, once you are 21.
However, you will get it without any magazines.
There are currently no 10 round magazines for the XDm.
You will have to take the large capacity magazine parts that your LE cousin gives you and you use them to make permanent 10 round magazines.

i found a local range that will rent, just wont be able to until after my birthday of course.
would it be that difficult to modify 12rd magazines into 10rd? i guess i could worry about that after, seeing as i would need to arrange things with my cousin anyways. I look into how much would be required on his part. I dont need him to jump through all sorts of hoops. I might be going to reno on my birthday, if so i could probably make a stop at a local gun shop there and actually handle an XDm before i go through all that effort.

The XD9 is a great first gun. Buy it and an equal dollar amount of ammo and go enjoy yourself! Many new shooters I take to the range fall in love with the XD9.

Don't know who rents near you, but if you are around this Sunday, I'm shooting the IDPA match at the Sac Valley Shooting Center. If you come by, I can arrange to let you try my XD9 and XD45 if you want. PM if you want details of where/when.

Which brings up one other issue...keep in mind that if you get a compensated gun, you cannot use it to compete in IDPA or USPSA/IPSC (unless you drop the $$$ on a non-compensated replacement barrel). Not sure if that is important to you, but these are insanely fun sports that don't cost a ton of money to get involved in.

What's so great about the XDm? If you are really set about it, why don't you just wait a bit for 10 rd mags to be available. In the meantime pick up a 22lr pistol & practice shooting. Ammo is cheap & build your foundation for that XDm.

The thing about going with the XD40 is that you can buy a conversion barrel to shoot 9mm for ~$100. You can also get another barrel to shoot .357Sig as well.
