    Rust on Sig P226

I've run into an issue twice with my ~year old Sig P226 where rust will suddenly develop mostly on the sights and the hammer. The rust appears to mostly be surface rust and has come off fairly well with some cleaner (followed by some oil) but I love this thing and it's certainly not cheap and I'm eager to prevent this from happening again.

It once happened while being kept in a locked drawer and now happening while being kept in a foam lined Stack-On pistol safe.

Will a dehumidifier prevent this from happening again? I'm struggling to find a small one that will fit in this small safe. Most rechargeable dehumidifiers appear to be made for gun lockers.

Foam holds in moisture and exposes your gun to it. I've had good luck with silicon impregnated gun socks healthy amounts of oil and an Eva dry. I live really close to the beach so rust is a constant problem for me. I also like eezox if applied correctly.

Keep it extremely wet with synthetic stuff like mpro7.

Remove all rust first, give it a good lube job, then find a better place to store it

Go to Michael's arts and crafts store and buy a box of silica used to dry flowers. Place in open container, place in the safe and you're done.

I have used Rig Gun Grease on a Rig Rag for decades and not a spot of rust has appeared... It stays on better than oil... Use a tin brush or a toothbrush to get it under shotgun ribs and other hard to reach areas... Keeps shotgun barrels from rusting to recievers and choke tubes.. Assemble pistols with rig on internal parts--barrels,,slides ect... Works for me.. Cheers...

LOL I can't remember seeing a pic of a Sig that isn't a few years old without that brown hammer.

Ditch the foam. Foam can hold moisture. Put a golden rod, a big can of desiccant, some silicone cloths, and a humidity meter. All can be had off Amazon for $50-$60 give or take. Also buy a can of Renaissance Wax.

Clean the pistol and give it a good coat of wax, particularly on the problem areas. Put the pistol in the safe and check it daily until you're sure you have a stable environment. Then check weekly with a weekly wipe-down with the silicone cloth...although you may not need to with a good coat of wax on there.

Also, you might have to switch to something else if you can't get a golden rod in your safe. Like maybe a locking foot locker or something if you're not going to buy a full size safe.

Alternatively you could use the wax and then store your gun in a Borestore or similar and see if that solves your problem. Renaissance wax is fantastic stuff. And you'll find a ton of other uses for it. One can will last you forever so don't be put off by the price.
