AR pistol from an 80

I recently purchased an 80% with the intentions of making a pistol but I'm new in the ar world and just finished building my 16in AR15. How do I make the upper for the pistol into a single shot and what are all the steps that I have to do to be 100% legal? I plan on engraving it and registering it as a pistol. Are there barrel length limits on a pistol?

Why do you wanna make your pistol upper single shot? On an 80% hats not required as far as I know. And no there's no barrel length limits on a pistol, build it as short or as long as you want.

I don't want to, I just thought I had to, to be California compliant. I just don't really know where to go from here to make a 100% legal pistol. I have the 80 and my friend is going to sell me a complete 7.5in upper but I want to figure out exactly what I have to do first in order to be legitament.
