Are the only differences between the two the barrel and sights?

looking at the specs for both those look to be the only differences.

If you're into firearms, $1k is definitely cheap.

Some of us spend about $500-$1,000 on ammo per month (I know I do) just to have a steady supply in the years to come.

I had a Glock 20SF milled out and by the time it was all over it was over $1000. If the FNX was available in 10mm I'd likely have gone that way.
