The SP is a little wider across the cylinder and just a little larger / thicker all over.
It's not much, but the SP is beefier than the J.

Depends on the clambering but a 38 or 357 mag Sp101 is 5 shot cylinder.

the Ruger SP101 requires a larger holster than one that would fit a S&W standard J-frame revolver correctly. there are holsters that are made to fit both the S&W Magnum J-frame revolver and the Ruger SP101.

ruger sp101 is definitely larger than a j-frame.
additionally, there is a difference re holster for S&W j-frames as well: my model 60-14 required a different holster when getting a Kydex.
