Sp 101 put in jail

Well after buying a henry 45-70 for me, My pops felt bad for leaving my wife out so he ordered her a Ruger SP-101 .357 with the 4.2" bbl. She didn't believe me when I told her but I finally convinced her. It finally came in and we went up to do the paper work today, boy is she excited.

I just picked one up myself

Had the 2 1/4" barreled .38 and liked it so much I figured the 4" adjustable sighted version would be great. Haven't taken her to the range yet.

That is a very nice gift indeed. I didn't know that the SP101 came with the fiber optic front sight blade. That is really sweet looking for sure. Let us know how she likes it after you get it out of jail and go shoot it. Very nice of your dad.

Start her out with .38 non+P loads, then graduate to +P loads.

If those are fine with her, then maybe go to .357 Mag.

I have one in .357 (3") that my wife keeps for HD, but those small grips are very hard to hang onto for both of us using .357 loads. It now has a Hogue Monogrip which, in our estimation, is much better.

It also has a Wolff lightened trigger-return spring and lighter mainspring, which totally transformed the pistol into a nice shooter, both DA and SA.

I put wolff springs in mine and Hogue grips.
of all the snubs I have , the ruger just will not stop shooting low for me ..... the springs and different grips helped ..... but it's frustrating , otherwise it's a decent firearm

I don't know what expertise any of you have about the SP101. I'll be honest that I had none prior to doing the Wolff trigger/hammer spring changes (other than shooting it quite a bit), but I used these links as guides when performing my work on my pistol (as in, I do not work on other folks' pistols).

Fairly straight-forward overall. Very good info on some small details. I have not found the need for the hammer side shims. Although I do not own a GP100, I believe the same would pertain to that model as well.

Let me clarify that I am NOT a bullseye shooter.

Growing up in Michigan and Nebraska, I was a shotgun guy rather than a pistol shooter. I worked at (the now-defunct) Roberts' Shooting Park (trap and skeet) for three years (1968-1970), winter and summer, in Elkhorn NE, for $1.50/hr, and that was good part-time money in those days for a high-school kid. (LOL, it is now the site of a community college.) I was taught to see the entire top of the barrel and just focus upon the front sight/bead (I also had a center bead on the vent rib for alignment) on my Rem 870 12 ga. when shooting skeet. When pulling a skeet round for other shooters, I got used to seeing the shot "cloud" in relation to the clay and could tell whether the shot was behind, ahead, above, or below the clay while I stood directly behind the shooter (at 23 yards it is not that hard to do).

Farmers and other city novices shooting in the early Fall in prep for pheasant season would invariably sight the shotgun as a rifle and nearly always shot low, under the clay.

My point is that I have applied that to my pistol shooting for SD/HD. I rarely use the rear sight and concentrate upon the entire front sight as the rear sight is just a shallow fixed groove on top of the frame, insofar as the SP101 pistols I am referring to. Doing so will allow the POA to approximate the POI. Actually, I do the same with my 1911 .45 ACP Gold Cup clone. Front sight, front sight. Always.
