Ruger 454 toklat

I am a CA resident. Does anybody know if it's legal to buy a gun like the, ruger 454 toklat, out of state and then bring it back and register it here in CA? They are not on the approved roster for sale in CA. Does that mean they can't be sold or owned in CA, or just not sold. Thanks

Since the barrel is longer than 3.5" you should be able to find a FFL to SAE it.

The first part, absolutely not.

If you are a CA resident, you can go out of state and buy a handgun, but Federal law and California law on handguns requires that the handgun be shipped to an FFL in your state of residence. You may not "bring it back".

The second part, 'not on Roster' means it may not be transferred by a CA FFL (which the answer to the first part requires) unless
YOU are exempt (typically a LEO)
THE GUN is exempt (Single Action conversion as keith1911 suggests, or more commonly C&R)
THE TRANSACTION is exempt (typically a gift transfer from parent or child)

You can ship your registered handgun to any US gunsmith, you are not limited to California only gunsmith.

My question is; if I buy a gun with a 7 1/2" barrel, is it legal to have it shortened?

On another note; do you know if it's possible to add a muzzle-break to a .480 Ruger Alaskan with a 2 1/2" barrel? I don't mean drill the 2 1/2" barrel, I mean add a break, which would add another inch or two to the barrel. If yes, do you know who does this work? I've searched the net, and most breaks are for rifles. Most of the breaks I've seen for revolvers look like they're drilled into the end of the barrel.
