Why a 1911?

Any ball ammo you can find for a decent price. Winchester white box at your local sprawl-mart is as good as any.

It'll be awhile before your ammo choice will become a determining factor in your accuracy. Just buy some and start practicing.

Why a 1911?

After considering all replies, I am not sure I made the right decision.
But, I bought a Dan Wesson Pointman 7 1911 in 45 ACP. I am exceedingly picky about any appearance defects, and found two very minor nits with it, but suspect no gun will live up to my standards. Most bothersome is a tiny (1/16" or less), shiny thin line on a matte gray area at end of gun, only visible in certain light.

I walked out of the dealer not sure if I did the right thing, but given the recent price increase with Dan Wesson and the demand for guns, I should be able to recoup my investment if it turns out the 1911 is not for me. After handling it, I rather suspect that will not be the case. Will report later after a range visit.

You might as well take the gun back. Because if you are going to fit in with
the 1911 crowd you have to overlook those "loving" marks.

Now go take that 1911 outside and throw it in the dirt and get over it.

As for the original question: Why a 1911??

If you're in Norcal and want to sell that Pointman 7 for a fair price, let me know.

I went down to the dealer and looked at my new Pointman 7 (as the 10 days ticks by). Nah, I'm keeping it, unless something is weird with how it shoots (very unlikely). Any perceived defects I saw are mostly my imagination, and the one tiny, tiny mark is really nothing at all. I bought it for a multitude of reasons, but in total, pleased I do own it. I tend to shoot a lot of rounds, so will learn quickly how well it performs.

My local Wal-Mart (Pleasanton, CA), tells me they will no longer carry ammo. The Vallejo, CA gun show I attended today, sold out of the needed ammo in less than two hours. I'll keep looking. Glad I was looking for basic ball ammo, but was trying to focus on 230 grain.

All I can say is, why not??

To answer the question on how it compares to other non-1911 semi-autos. I mostly got the Dan Wesson Pointman 7 45 because it looks excellent, is very well built, does have an outstanding trigger, carries a multitude of quality parts (i.e. Wolf springs, Bomar sites, etc.). I like solid steel guns, like my CZ 75B 9mm, that are fullsize, and this 1911 Dan Wesson satisfied that. It is also a bit less common than other brands..something different. As someone said, "every collection needs a 1911", and felt some of that myself.
