My First Wheel Gun

I never owned a wheel gun and have been feeling nostalgic lately. So I decided to pick up my first revolver. For some reason this Model 19 was calling my name. It's currently in route to my FFL.



Is there any way to date them via serial number? I'm totally new to the S&W world and don't know much about it.

I am guessing it is a Model 19-4 because I had one identical to it but I had the RR/WO/TT/TH option. So 1977 to 1981. New it was $202 MSRP in 1979. Enjoy ..

I haven't seen it in person yet so I don't have the serial. It's in the mail to my FFL. I paid $750 for it but will still have to pay a little more for the SAE work with the DROS.

Take the grips off and the s/n is stamped in the butt. Nice find. I bought mine new in 1978, paid $300, red ramp, target hammer and trigger, white outline rear sights. Took the original Goncalo Alves grips off and stored them, because the checkering made my hands sore after a session with Magnum ammo.

What's the serial number?

It's a number engraved on the firearm used to track it, but that's not important now.

The RR/WO/TT & TH are just that, options. Those things have no relation to which dash it is, dashes were related to mechanical changes.

Post a partial serial # (last 2 or 3 digits X'd out) and a model, color, barrell length description to this forum. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1961-1980/

Those guys rock and will tell you based on the standard catalog of Smith & Wesson an approximate year of manufacture. Only Roy Jinks can tell you more.

Also, well done on a first .357! Be careful though. My tastes turned from tacticool to blued revolvers after buying the very same gun!

Three things of note on your epic grab!
1) It's a pinned and recessed Smith. This is HUGE
2) Has the universally loved football target grips.
3) Single action trigger stop is still in place.

For $750 you did very well.
If it has box and paperwork you pretty much stole it.
