AK Pistols can't go featureless and no one (to my knowledge) has made a maglock that breaks open the firearms actions. So yes you will have to register as an AW. This weapon then has destination requirements and cannot be sold or inherited in CA.NRA Lifer

You can always make a fixed mag AK if you put your mind to it. In fact, the first OLL AKs in CA were top loading, fixed mag rifles. You could do a fixed mag pistol the same way. Then, you would not have to register it as an AW and could sell it later.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

The only method I'm aware of to avoid registration would be to weld the mag in place, and then top load (remove dust cover, remove bolt, carrier, & spring, load, then put gun back together). I don't expect non-RAW AK pistols to be very popular next year unless an innovative solution becomes available.Comment

It's not that hard to make a fixed AK mag without welding anything. Simply drilling and tapping a small hole in the receiver and locktiteing a machine screw in place behind the mag release to keep the mag release from moving is all that is needed. A modified Jperl 10-30 lever mag that has a loading port in the side opposite the lever would make it easy to load without having to field strip it or load through the ejection port. Or, just use the lever mag and load through the ejection port. Either way, it isn't a hard thing to do.The only method I'm aware of to avoid registration would be to weld the mag in place, and then top load (remove dust cover, remove bolt, carrier, & spring, load, then put gun back together). Damned this state, I bought multiples of many platforms I enjoy somewhat as investments. Now it's come to a point that I don't want to,sell yet but if I don't I will not be able to. A top loading AK sounds like a PITA honestly, as opposed to a top loading AR platform at least. So many decisions so little time.
Regarding the comment of turning it into a rifle wouldn't I just be better off buying a AK as a rifle rather than converting the pistol? I'm not nearly as familiar with the AK platform as I am AR's.
However the rifle version could be made featureless, correct? I guess it would be pretty neat having sequential serial numbers on both a rifle and pistol...hmmmm.Comment

Yeah it might be easier if you can find one in this market. All you would have to do is add a 6" muzzle extension and pin and weld it in. Then you can add a stock. Yes an AK rifle can be made featureless. I personally tried featureless on my Saiga and I wasn't a fan.Damned this state, I bought multiples of many platforms I enjoy somewhat as investments. CSA , I didn't see your post before my last reply. So going that route I could just load through the side of the magazine with minimal damage to the rifle? That doesn't sound very bad at all. Well I can't believe that I am saying that, but sadly I have no plans of leaving CA for at least 10 years so I have to deal with it one way or anotherComment

6" muzzle extension and a stock/ grip wrap is all that is needed to make it a rifle? Hmmm a pinned and welded faux suppressor does seem somewhat "tacticoooool"Comment

I just did a google image search and had another thought, would a folding stock be possible? The overall length when folded would just have to be 30" right? Or am I mistaken on that aspect?Comment
