Light primer strikes on 686

Just picked up a 686-6 4" yesterday. Been fondling her and wanted to load up some empty shells with primers to use as somewhat of a very heavy cap gun until I can take her out.

Didn't wanna use my good cci primers, so I just put in some cheap wolf small rifle primers. Did about 2 cylinders full in da, 4 or 5 of the 12 resulted in light primer strikes. I know these are not the primers to use for real loads, but shouldn't it still have been consistent for all 12? I checked the strain spring - super tight, under the ejector star - it's squeaky clean, previous owner claims 12 rds fired total thru gun so it does look darn new, firing pin is not broken and moves in n out easily.

Any suggestions on what to check next ?

Try pistol primers and report back. There's a range where the firing pin will properly detonate the primer. The rifle primers might be on the outer edge of that range. Did you try re-firing the ones that didn't fire?

Not sure why you'd want to use rifle primers in a 686...you're not shooting 454 Casull

Yes, they did fire on 2nd attempt. Again, Using those primers cuz they're the cheapest and I'm pretty much just wasting them for the small bang. Saving my cci and winchesters for the real ammo.

Many SRP have a very hard cups.

Gun is likely fine.

Wolf primers are super hard, plus you used rifle. I wouldn't worry about the 686 unless after using the proper primers it had ftf's.

Shoot it with regular ammo with pistol primers and I'm sure they'll shoot fine.

Will try with the proper primers, I just thought they'd be consistently light strikes as opposed to hit n miss like that.

I've used Wolf SR primers and they are hard. They are a nice insurance for AR-15 loads. I use SR primers with my 38 Super raceguns and never had a misfire until I used Worf SR primers.

Come back after you shoot it at the range with factory ammo.

18 "cap gun" loads with cci # 500 spp, all is well. Gonna load up some 158 gn lswc with roll crimp and blue dot and try them out in next week or so.

Small rifle primers work in my semis and revolvers, the AR type primers do not.

I agree with previous posters that rifle primers are harder.
However, you never stated if this was a new gun or a previously owned gun.
You might want to take the grips off and make sure the strain screw is fully screwed in. Some people think they can adjust(lighten) the trigger pull by backing out the screw. With the screw backed out, the hammer won't fall as hard.

Good CCI primers--that funny. Now if you have Federal primers i could believe good. I have a box of 5000 CCI SPP's that I can't sell to any USPSA shooters. CCI are too hard Win and Fed are the way to go.

Federal are advised against being used on my press because they are softer.
