Is that grease or melted plastic?

If it's grease I'd say it looks normal. Just keep an eye on the rails to make sure they're not getting worse over time.

If it's melted plastic on/around the rail in the pic, I'd say email them again explaining that. Melting is never a good sign on a plastic gun.

I hand chamber my PM9 *briskly* and it's never given me a problem. I don't slingshot, but wrap my hand over the top of the slide and punch the gun forward while pulling the slide back.
It's not grease at all, everything in that picture is plastic... scraped up or melted I don't know. hmmm maybe he thought it was grease as well.

So your front right rail is much thinner than all the other rails? Do your rails show any signs of melting/scraping? All of the other rails on the gun look clean which concerns me that this is not normal wear.

I don't see what their explanation of racking problems has to do with anything. If it is melted, get a fedex number and send it back. If it is grease, clean it and try again. I would not hesitate at all to get snippy with them. It's $600/lb, it damn well better work right.
Are you serious? That sounds pretty ****ty to me... If I have a round in the chamber and my mag is full I want that thing to go bang every time I pull the trigger till the mag is empty. If I knew their guns jam when hand racked I probably wouldn't have bought the damn thing. That just sounds lame to me...

But yea you're right, that has nothing to do with a melted frame. I wasn't sure if that was normal break in or what? Doesn't sound like it

The right front rail is shorter than the others but it is the same thickness in the front as the rest of the rails. It does thin from about the middle of the rail to the back.

Email them back and let them know that it is not grease in the pic, but melted or worn plastic. When I first saw the pic it looked a lot like grease to me.

I've never had a failure in any way with mine, even though I hand rack it. You just can't be gentle with it or it might not lock up properly.

The PM9 also has a metal / sub rail in the dust cover, but what is interesting me is that they got onto "no hand racking" when you showed them an issue with the rail on your PM9. How did they go off on that tangent?

What kind of lube are you using? Aren't petroleum based lubes bad as they degrade polymers?

Lastly, mine was the original thread and it was weird to read in their manual that they recommend only using the slide release to chamber your first round.

It's only got 5 boxes through it- I'll try and post a pic of the frame if it'll help you.

The polymers used in the Khar shouldn't be bothered by petroleum based gun solvents.

But I use Slip2000 CLP on most of my guns. Not a great cleaner, but it is a great lube. It's non-petroleum based and biodegradable.

I've got a stainless K40 Elite '03 so I don't have to worry about melting plastic! I also have never had an issue with "improper" loading of the first round. I'd definitely send yours back as it looks very unhealthy...

I use Breakfree on all my guns. Never checked if it is petroleum based or not. They got on that tangent because I mentioned that it would also FTB thinking that it would give them more information to go on as to what was wrong with the pistol.

Yea, can you please post a pic of your rail? I definately want to see the difference so I can better explain what is odd about the rail.

The more I look at this thing and the more I think about it... there is definately something wrong with it. I just took some really close up pictures of it to see what is really going on (my camera can actually take pictures of things so small I can't see with my own eyes) and it really looks as though it got melted rather then scratched. Heres the pic... If you magnify the rail... you can see that it looks like there are pieces melting off of it. This is taken after I wiped it off.

Yup, this thing is messed up, theres NO WAY this rail should get that torn down in under 400 rounds. Once I hit 1000 there won't even be a rail anymore...

Interesting...does anybody here read Gun Tests Magazine? I just got my Feb 09 issue, where they tested a KAHR PM4543 and found a similar problem with the rails, although it hadn't progressed nearly as far as yours (it was new).

                  Kahr Rails.jpg

The reviewer noticed a "cutting tool"-like protusion on the inside of the slide, and figured that's what caused the damage.

IMO, if a gun manufacturer told me that I wasn't supposed to rack the slide by hand, I'd look for another brand of gun. If it's a self-defense pistol, it should be deadnuts reliable under any condition, and there should be 17 different ways to rack the slide without damging the pistol.

Seriously, why would an 8-foot Wookie live on a planet full of 3-foot Ewoks. It does not make sense!!

OP, I contacted Kahr about some strange barrel weat and he sent me his Fed Ex account # to return it for evaluation. Send them an e-mail and they will take care of you, great customer service from what I have experienced.

How did you get him to send you his Fed Ex account number? How long ago was this? He said he would take it back now but in the bottom of the email it basically says I have to ship it back with my own money prepaid which will run $40.

In the response I got from him this morning, he still says that the wear on that rail is normal. I'm starting to seriously doubt this company now. I bought this pistol because it had a good reputation. Now I learn that 1) I'm not allowed to hand rack the slide and 2) normal pistol wear includes a melting rail with under 400 rounds through it? Come on now ... are they serious??? Once I get this damn thing fixed I think you guys will see a PM9 in the classifieds section.
