It absolutely can be... http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...up-ar-convert/ is a working rifle, if the new trigger group were moved back a few inches and the magwell took the place of the grip it would make an AR technically legal as long as you have no foregrip, but I've seen plenty of bare-barrel ar pistols before anyway

This grip makes AR pistols featureless in CA?

Other issue
That replacement pistol grip is a rifle stock so what you would create if your barrel was under 16 inches would be an unregistered SBR.
So in trying to get around the California AW law, you would violate both the Federal and State "FELONY" laws on "SBRs".
Of course after that point, you wouldn't have to worry about any features on guns since all guns for you would now be prohibited since you would be a "convicted felon".
If it is "cool", it probably is illegal.Comment

I have no clue what they're doing here. They have what looks like 2 buffer tubes. Why not just put the rifle buffer tube with the stock in the correct place and remove the pistol buffer tube, and then just leave the hammerhead grip as it is.
Also, just because you see a pistol buffer tube, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a pistol. You can use a pistol buffer tube on a rifle if you really want I guess. I'm not sure of the reason though.Comment

While it looks odd, I can see the attraction for people with neck injuries who are not comfortable with the cheek weld of the AR. Most traditional sporting rifles orient the end of the stock a bit lower relative to the bore axis.- Rich

That is one of the options for using the Hammerhead... AFAIK, it could be used with the stock in the normal position.

I can see it now I guess, a poor man's Thordsen stock.Comment

Except that our Hammerhead came on the market in 2009; it predates Thordsen's FRS-15 by years.
Also Hammerhead is one of only two featureless products currently in production that have the DOJ's sworn testimony at trial that it's not a pistol grip and therefore legal for featureless.
Here's more info about the product, about halfway through the product page are numerous links including some showing the four major stock configurations:
