I'll take the former. softmentor's case is especially egregious since it involved a .38 Special rather than a magnum.

Anybody ever heard of a GP-100 throwing it's barrel off? Or kersploding in any way, shape or form?


ETA: Not exactly rare, a story about NC DOC's M64s, from 2006:

At a meeting last month at a shooting range in Smithfield, Smith & Wesson representative got a live demonstration of the problems. During test firing of about three dozen revolvers, four misfired, meaning nothing happened when the trigger was pulled. The barrel also broke off a different model when it was fired, something that has happened 14 times in practice firings since 2003.

That gun looks painfully familiar, I did it to a 1970's made Smith 25 a few years back - TiteGroup X 2 charge didn't go over well, although a new scandium Smith survived just fine. A friend and I fired just seconds apart.

I've been buying Smith & Wesson revolvers since the 1970s. I won't buy a new one because of the lock, the "spray paint" finish and mottled grey finish trigger/hammer. I dislike the change in frame profile caused by the lock too. Having said that ....

We always like what's long gone. I recall in the old farts in the 70's saying "Smith has gone downhill" & they wouldn'd buy anything marked "Bangor Punta" because the frame was "made overseas" and, they'd swear, metal shavings poured out of the action. Some of the actions were a bit rough, I've seen my share of loose fitted cylinder yokes and less than straight ejector rods, bad timing right out of the box, etc. I've handled a few new Smiths, bought a lockless 442 for out of state CCW, used to own a newer Model 21. Despite the cosmetic deficiencies that preclude me from buying, I found the action smoother and the timing spot on. Although the MIM geometric fit parts don't slick up (IMO) as well as machined carbon steel it sure took less work to get it almost as close. I think Smith probably builds a more closely toleranced, better fitted handgun today than in the past. But in general that's not why I buy a handgun these days. I'd like there to be a bit of art involved.

Does the S&W tell you why it's happen, does S&W ask you to send them back the revolver so they can investigate, or "here the new one and get loss and just pray that wont happen again".

I had a S&W pistol, I want an explanation from S&W, tell us what went wrong.
You guy keep bashing Hi-Point, but I have not seen H-Point pistol does that bad.
If S&W quality Control & Assurance that bad then there is no difference between S&W and Made In China.

They don't need to investigate. They know their quality control is in the toilet & barrels coming off don't surprise them.

There's a lot of reasons why this could happen. Several of them not related to S&W quality. To just quit buying based on this one incident is not fair to yourself or Smtih & Wesson. Personally, I would need a lot more information before I made a statement like that. Besides, what else are you going to buy? Taurus? LOL

This is an entirely different barrel of fish. This was caused by an overcharged handload, not a manufacturing defect.
