West German Sig P228 without date code??? Update

I'm having a West German Sig P228 shipped from a Cabelas in Phoenix to the Cabela's in Utah. I asked the sales person at the store what the date code was on the gun.

I told him where to look and he advised me that he didn't see anything. I haven't purchased the gun. I'm just having shipped to my local Cabelas for possible purchase.

Is it possible for a legit P228 not to have a date code?

The gun finally came in. The KB date code. The manager at the Cabela's store dropped the price of the gun to $524. I think that's a great price for a West German P228. I'll get another $20 off for answering a stupid Cabela's customer survey. The gun is in pretty good condition with box and 2 mags.. I'll post pics soon.

Yes it is possible no date code. Did you ask him to look for German proof marks in the same place? It could be a transition gun, not true West German just built in USA using leftover german parts. If it was really completed in Germany, it will have the german proof mark.

P228's built here in the US for US consumption will not have a date code. I purchased a P228 NIB back in like 2005 and it did not have the date code. If it's truly a West German P228, then it should have the date code. Also, newer German SIGs have the date code on the barrel, not the chin of the slide. It's usually on the side of the barrel that is not seen through the ejection port when the gun is assembled.

How do you know the P228 is West German? The label "Made in W. Germany" is stamped on the slide. Does it have the 3 matching serial numbers? I've heard of some parts guns and Sig refurbished guns that have the serial number on the slide milled off at the factory. I've heard of the "W" in "Made in W. Germany" getting crossed off with an "X" mark.

It could be a later P228 model using an old frame and a P229 slide.

Do you know the serial number? That can tell the approximate year of the frame.

US assembled P series sigs started in late 1997. They are 100% german parts but were imported as parts kits and assembled in the US. Sig did this to save on the cost of the proofing- the US doesn't require proofing like Europe does.

I have a 220 like this, made in 1998. It only has the serial # engraved in the frame. There are no other engravings in the frame at all.

            to add-
Sigs marked made in W Germany were made until 1995. The German government passed a law that let companies use W Germany for 5 years after unification. Most companies took it upon themselves to continue with W Germany markings so that their products weren't thought of as being made in E Germany.

I'd be willing to bet that your pistol mas made sometime between 1998-2005.
