Hi all. I have been itching for a Luger for some time now. The latest SOG International ad has German Lugars for $639. Has anyone bought one and if so, what kind of condition are they in? Thanks, Brian

None of the folks on the other C&R firearms forums who bought one were very happy with them. A few of them got returned to SOG.

They are all reblued and mismatched with a GIGANTIC Century Arms "billboard" dot matrix import stamp on the side.

They appear to be Russian captured and rearsenaled, but SOG says they aren't. But SOG also says that their Turkish surplus 8mm from the 1940's is non-corrosive.

If you go to Parallax Bill's C&R Firearms Forums and check out the German Handguns forum you can see some photos.

I have seen pretty nice matching, non-import marked P-08's sell on the online auctions for only $100 more than SOG's price.

Thanks AmendmentII....My gut was telling me pretty much the same thing you said. I think I will keep watching the auctions trying to find "the one".

For $639 from a distributor I would not expect Lugers in collectable condition. I see most Lugers with matching numbers bringing $800 - $1200 (even the common one from DWM and Erfurt).

These sound pretty bad to me, sort of "shooter grade minus," and to me, are maybe worth $350 to play with. But I don't know if you can find even a junker Luger for that price anymore.

Glad this thread is here. My husband is looking at these Lugers, and my suggestion to him was that these are probably not in good shape at this price. I'll share this thread with him.

I bet there's some discussion of these guns on the message boards over at www.lugerforum.com, but I agree, they sound overpriced. The lugerforum folks can also help you find good prices on Lugers.

I don't see many shooter Lugers for under $500, but they do turn up. Best bet is a mismatched reblue, which should run in the $500 range.

I understand the desire for Lugers - I have a shooter myself - but it's worth noting that the sights are poor, the triggers are mediocre, and reliability is often not too good. I don't shoot mine too much (no, it's not for sale!).

For those in the Bay Area, I understand Krauseworks carries an assortment of Lugers, but I haven't been there.

This is very true. There is little that can be done to change much of these characteristics without seriously altering the gun. After firing my three Lugers I have noted that they are uniformly accurate despite these design peculiarities. You also need the magazine loading tool if you want to shoot more than 4-5 rounds at a time without bleeding thumbs and torn fingernails. I read a comment by an American military officer where he says "if WW I had been fought with pistols we would have won as soon as the Germans needed to reload." The roller skate key is important. Back in the 50s and 60s there were gunsmiths who specialized in accurizing Lugers with heavy barrels etc.

I think I'm going to wait until I find "the one". I don't really care for import marked guns (I do own several though) and I don't think I want to take a chance on a sight unseen from SOG. So paying a little more and knowing what I get is worth it. Thanks for all the replies.
