g17 aro tek extended slide stop and solution

came across a g17 that had an aro tek extended slide stop that was causing problems.

the slide stop would get actuated when a magazine was inserted. this was not always apparent when the slide was already forward. this would be a particular problem if the slide was already locked back.

with the slide already locked back, magazine inserted the slide stop would not deactuate under slide stop spring pressure. only forced actuation of the slide stop would drop the slide. this means that a mag change on empty, yank on slide and you'd still have a locked slide. not really confidence inspiring.

this is not a problem for right handers necessarily, particularly people trained to use the slide stop as a slide release, but since it's a problem for left handers and the person who's gun it is was taught to drop the slide with gross movement i had to fix it.

the aro tek came in out of spec in a couple ways.

in the picture i show one of the bends being too wide. this made the slide stop not sit flush with the left side of the polymer frame.

this made the slide stop "bite" the magazine when it was inserted (whether the slide release was "up" or "down."

so after taking out the slide stop, i had to do a little countertop forging (i just bent it in the right places). the slide stop is made of pretty decently resiliant material, took a few tries to get the bend all the way to the right angle. i also tried to close up the bends that were actually at the slide stop's "button/lever area" so the button/lever would ride closer to the frame.

all in all, it does appear that most glock mods are solutions seeking a problem. this gun was purchased modded, just a caveat emptor.
