    M&p shield questions

    What is the circled object?

And why won't it go into battery if I put a round in the chamber and release the slide?

1)Sear deactivation lever, to be used during takedown so you don't have to pull the trigger to field strip the gun. I don't use it, I just use the trigger after following safe handling procedures.

    2) could be a few reasons, but you should never drop a round in the chamber and then drop the slide on it - that is a good way to break your extractor. It is possible your extractor is not popping back over the rim of the cartridge, because it is not designed to do that.

Not the yellow piece. The Allen wrench looking thing that protrudes from just below the firing pin. Above the lever.

Also I'll stop doing it. Thanks for the info.

          Oh that's the ejector?
When I looked at the schematics I thought that the ejector was located on the right side. My bad Ninja.

Yes, that is the ejector. With semi-auto pistols, there are two items that perform similar tasks and have similar names.

Extractor: This holds onto the lip of the cartridge. As the gun fires and the slide is forced backwards, the extractor pulls the cartridge out of the chamber. Kinda-sorta. The cartridge is also pushed back by the force of the shell firing, but you get the idea. So, it 'extracts' the cartridge from the chamber.

Ejector: As the cartridge is being pulled back, it will hit the ejector and pop the cartridge out of the gun. That's how it flips out of the gun at roughly the 4:00 position (or somewhere there abouts...Unless it's a Glock. If it's a Glock, then the cartridge will just dribble out of the gun or fly back at you. If you're a woman, it will find your boobs. Just like a man...).

Hopefully I explained it o.k. If I used the wrong terminology, I will get flamed. But, I hope this helped.

            Happy shooting and be safe!

The Shield is a great little pistol.

If the ejector was on the right it would try and eject cases to the left

We're talking ejector not extractor, that is where you're getting left/right crossed.

OOOOOOh I gotchya. Ejectors push the brass out, while extractors pull the brass out!
                        Right?

                          It should

It should go into battery when you release the slide with a loaded magazine inserted. However sometimes the M&P Shield that I have has to have the magazine slapped on the bottom with a good amount of force for it to fully seat. So is your failing to pick up a round? Because if it is, then that might be the cause for you as well. But if it picks up a round and just fails to chamber it then it could be a number of things. Lubrication. Recoil spring. Those would be the first thing I would check. Take it apart and lube it well, then make sure the recoil spring is installed properly.
