Is there something wrong with this 1911?

The hammer will fall when the trigger is pulled when the slide is pushed rearwards a tiny amount.

Tiny as in a the slide is rearwards at only 2 mm.

Good new is that the hammer will not drop when the slide is pushed rearwards 1/4 inch.

I thought the hammer is only suppose to fall only when the 1911 slide is fully forward.

I am no expert but maybe check if there's excessive wear on the nubs of the disconnector.

That depends on the relationship of the disconnector head to disconnector Ramp Slot in the slide, and disconnector "pad" to the sear "feet".

As the slide moves rearward, the disconnector ramp pushes the disconnector down, until its pad gets out from ahead of sear "feet" and gets under them, thereby disconnecting.

If the disco ramp is cut too much forward, it will take significant rearward travel of the slide to disconnect...

If the disconnector is too short, same thing (which I have not seen yet in my limited experience).

In any case, you can see yourself what is going on, by taking the gun apart and taking a look at appropriate places.

for example, if you take all the internals out of the frame (MSH, Beavertail, Sear, Disco, Hammer) put the slide back on, flip the gun over and look through the disco hole as you move the slide back and forth, you will see how far forward the disco ramp sits off the disco hole in the frame. Preferably, the start of the ramp (forward) should line up with the edge of the disco hole in the frame.

Then, also, you can put everything back into the frame except the beavertail, and see how the disco "pad" and sear "feet" interact as you move the slide back.

Will this gun be safe to shoot to test? I'm scared of out of battery explosions.

As far as I know, it is pretty common on many production guns. 2mm of rearward travel was on my SA 1911-a1.

if it is a .45acp, with a good recoil spring, and it was properly built, it should return to battery all the time, but i know what you mean. I am no pro, so I can't say for sure, but at the slide being that far rearward (if it does happen), chances are the hammer will not strike the FP with sufficient force to detonate the primer. The hammer is likely to hit the FP Stop more than the FP.

If you find the reason, you can look into possible solutions. for example a taller disco.

So you can move the slide back 2mm and the hammer will still drop when the trigger is pulled?

Yes, my SA mil spec did that. But when it did, the hammer would hit the Firing Pin Stop at the same time as firing pin, would send the slide forward, but the round would not detonate because insufficient force was applied to the firing pin. I was speaking from my experience, but it doesn't apply everywhere.

Though I think it is pretty common.

On my Les Baer Custom Carry the hammer will still drop if the slide is back 2mm but the hammer does not hit the firing pin. And really 2mm is its limit. Anything past that and the hammer will not budge.

Remove the slide and turn it upside down. You'll note a short crescent shaped cut in the rear of the slide in which the disconnector rides. The angle of the cut is gradual. When the disconnector is centered in the cut and slide fully closed the hammer will fall. When the disconnector is clear of the cut (depressed) the hammer won't fall if the trigger is pulled. There is some "wiggle room" in which the slide can be pushed slightly to the rear yet the disconnector still in that cut. You 1911 doesn't sound at all unusual and I would say is perfectly safe.

I'll need to check all my 1911's.
Funny though, I've never felt a need to pull the trigger while I'm moving the slide back.

Bottom line, I think that even if the hammer falls on a partial FTRB, there should not be anything horrible happening.

So go shoot your Kimber, OP.

Its a Kimber bro... I would sell it for safety reasons and get a SA TRP or something reliable
