SA Mil-Spec safety problem

Well I was just doing draw drills with my milspec, and something odd happened. I've always thought the safety was quite hard to engage/disengage, along with how difficult it is to reassemble (see the small scratch mark). But this was my first 1911 so I didn't think anything of it.

Anyhow, this happened

I literally cannot move the safety selector because it's being blocked by the retention pin (whatever that part is called)

I have to use an object to push it in, then I can move the safety. It's done this multiple times.

What can I do to fix this? I don't know much about 1911s

Edit: it does it every single time now. It's never had this problem and I've put maybe 500 rounds down this gun.

As long as there is no round in the gun, o.k. to leave it. Then, call Springfield. They will fix it. They will e-mail a shipping label and give you a Return Authorization for the gun. You should have it back w/in a few weeks good as new. They may even do a few little extras for you.

I know it sucks, but SA's warranty/guarantee is beyond reproach.

Going out an a limb but is there any chance that when you had it apart, you said disassembly was tough, that you switched the detents from the slide release end to the safety end? If I remember correctly the detents are not the same on each end.

I could also be totally wrong.

I was thinking that this too. In any event, a trip back to SA would fix it.

While it's there, have them install an extended safety. Those GI style safeties can be difficult to manipulate.

I have only ever field stripped it, so no chance of me doing that.

Have them pin the ejector too.

Send it in. List everything you noticed or want checked out. SA does a complete disassembly and check. However they may not pick up on subtle problems.

I have one to send back next week. Can you send it from home and then delivered there? I've done this with rifles but never a handgun.

Yes. You ship the gun to SA and they will ship it back to your home address. Signature required of course.

That has to be a loose plunger tube. SA will fix it easily.

Maybe it's a CA safety feature to prevent it from firing - bullets specifically.
