Ordered my first gun, a Sig 226

Hello all!
I have been visiting the forum and have learned a lot in the last month. I decided it was time to order my first gun, a Sig 226 Blackwater 9mm. I don't know too much about guns, but so far I have purchased 1500 rounds of WWB, 1500 rounds of Remington UMC, 500 rounds of Blazer Brass, and 7 extra ProMags. What are the best products you would recommend for maintenance, cleaning, repair, etc. I plan on keeping two mags for home defense loads, and the others for the range. Does it hurt the mags to keep then loaded? Can you recommend a good in the wall safe that will also hold rifles? I do plan on getting private lessons/training when the gun arrives, however that may be 8 weeks out! I think my next gun will be a S&W 617 4" 22LR, what would be the best ammo for this? Congrats on the P226. Nice job stocking up, ditch the Promags for some Mecgars. Good job getting some formal instruction.

Those Otis or Outers pistol kits are fine for general cleaning. SIGs like to be run wet, you can also get some slide glide or other grease for the rails.

Sell the ProMags (if you can). Buy factory or MecGar (OEM) magazines.

Nice pick on the P226 for the first handgun. The Blackwater edition is a little silly, though. Jus a plane jane P226 would be fine, and wouldn't come with the premium of a second brandname on it.

Btw on magazines, the springs hate it when they are constNly being cycled. You know unloading and loading...

Buy own mags for home defense. Promags as range mags.

but that is a LOT of ammo... I bought 1000 rounds of 9mm for one of my guns and only ended up shooting about 600 rounds before selling the gun

617 is a great revolver but damn expensive. try to look for an H&R break top 22. i had one and loved it, dont know why the hell i sold it

Good choice, have fun shootin' up all that ammo. Keep the mags clean and they will treat you well.

yep, keep the mags loaded or unloaded and leave them "as is". magazine spring wear comes from the compression & decompression of the spring, not from being fully loaded and compressed, which is fine.

Check craigslist for safes for sale, I picked up a really nice one for ~450.

Great solid choice for a 1st gun. That is a ton of ammo, but that means more practice, which is always a good thing.

Keep on shooting it!!! Sounds like you will be. Also, join a range where you can go for no charge and just pay the annual fee. More range time equals more cost if you keep forking out 10-15 bucks per range session. Its 12 bucks per range fee per head or you can split a lane for 8 bucks per head. Way too much if you ask me.

Nice pick. I grabbed a plain-jane 226 (w/ night sights) last year and couldn't be happier with it. Groups are good, and it's eaten everything I've thrown at it without a single failure in 1K-1.5k rounds. I wouldn't have picked up the Blackwater myself, but that has more to do with my dislike of logos and branding than anything else.

Only piece of advice if this is your first: insert the mags with force to ensure proper seating. Every now and again the mags would catch just a bit short and the cartridges wouldn't chamber. Took me a few times to figure that out...

that may be a lot of ammo but you'll can never have enough! Although my 8 round 1911 magazines may have 2 rounds less than your 10 round mags I like to keep three ready for home defense. Statistically you'll only need less than one magazine but then again it's better to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

I know my first trip to the inner workings of a range was daunting. We should set up a forum for "going to the range today" to split the cost, try different pistols and help out one another.
