A work associate happens to have a mint, un-fired 1976 colt commander lightweight (stainless). He's thinking of selling it to me. What would a fair market value offer be? Thanks!

Colt commander lightweight....

Mint- unfired with OG box (which has matching S/N) all paperwork with OG purchase receipt.. Not a mark, nick or ding! Perhaps it is matte nickel rather than stainless. Chambered in .45acp. No pics as of yet. I'll pick it up (assuming he accepts my offer) on Tuesday. He had mentioned someone told him not to take less than $1800, just want to make sure that's a realistic value. Not trying to steal the thing, but don't want to over pay either...Last edited by 45acpguy; 06-05-2016, 5:16 PM.Comment

I am thinking $1000 would be fair. A Government in bright nickel I would jump on it but I am not a fan of the Commander or matte nickel

From the cell phone pics he showed me, I cannot be certain if its bright or matte finish. But it is the commander lightweight. He is the original owner, bought in 1977 and never took it out of the box!Comment

The Colt lightweight Commander has an aluminum alloy frame, not stainless. The Combat Commander can be blue or satin nickel plated over chrome moly steel.
In any case, I think $1200 to $1500 is a fair price.Last edited by 003; 06-05-2016, 6:58 PM.Comment

A question for the OP
Will this be a shooter or a safe queen?
I have the blued version, same vintage, which I shoot once a year. Hopefully the one you want has the full beavertail as these gun are snappy.
For the right price it may be worth more collecting than shooting. Even regular Commanders are running $1300 and they are probably easier to shoot than the LW.

The current BB lists the Combat Commander in satin nickel with a 10% premium for 98% or better but I don't see satin nickel listed for the Commander. Perhaps the owner has the all steel Combat Commander and not the lightweight Commander. Since the original owner has had it since 1977 it seems to me unlikely he would forget having it refinished, while more probable he's mistaken the Combat Commander for a lightweight.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

You are correct sir. I read down not realizing that the book listing had switched to the Series 70 Combat Commander. My apologizes to members with the correct information.
If it is a LW Commander then the serial will start with CLW.

As noted above if a Commander the serial number should have the CLW prefix. If no CLW prefix that would indicate a steel framed Combat Commander. It's easy to get these models mixed up - note this one on GB listed as "Commander" but actually a "Combat Commander":
