    1911 Recoil Buffer??? Yes/No & Why?

I'll be picking up my first 1911 in just two more days.
I was looking through some upgrades and came across these Recoil Buffers.
I know Wilson Combat makes some and a company called Buffer Technologies.

    Do they work?
I've read some online reviews and they seem to get mixed reviews.

    Anyone here use them?
    Feedback please...

GI short rod and plug. Spend the savings of not buying a recoil reducer on ammo.

The recoil buffers are only $9.

What company makes a "GI Short Rod and Plug" (so i can look it up online)?
      What are the benefits?

you didn't mention what type of 1911 you purchased. it might have the standard GI size rod and plug already.

general consensus is buffers might be good for reducing frame wear but they wear over time and unless replaced regularly can cause jams

for lots of 1911 info check out 1911forum.com and m1911.org

          It's a SW1911PD commander size.
I believe it comes with a full length guide rod, from what i've read on Smith & Wesson's website.

I've used the buffers, though I don't know how necessary they are for steel frame guns, they do seem to reduce frame impact in Al alloy frames. I ONLY use them during range time. I NEVER use them during a match and DOUBLY NEVER use them for carry.

A malfunction during range time is at worst an inconvenience. A malfunction during a match could cost you your place. A malfuction during real life could cost you much more..
            Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

I apologize for misreading your original post, I thought it said recoil reducer such as a springco, instead of a recoil buffer.

The FLGR in your S&W is perfectly fine, some swap out to the short GI rod and plug for easier takedown and the ability to charge a pistol by depressing the recoil plug.

The recoil buffer, or shok buffer is also a personal preference. After a couple hundred rounds they'll get chewed up and can jam up your pistol after it's worn. Furthermore, these recoil buffers limit your slide travel, so you won't be able to slingshot your 1911.

Save the $9.95. Many SOP for Baer owners is to toss out the shok buff that come in ours. I think I recently saw one of the shok buffs in my drawer collecting dust, if you want to try it out PM me your address. I'll send it to you to try out free.

Too many reasons for me to list.

Glock, Beretta, SIG, HK, Springfield and S&W automatically fail then.

They all contain plastic internal parts somewhere.

Because John Moses Browning didn't see a need for one?

The full length guide rod has become so pervasive in 1911 manufacturing that we now refer to original equipment by something other than their established nomenclature. The hell with the four horsemen and plagues - this marks the end of the world as we know it.

I use shock buffs on my IDPA 1911 which just happens to be my ccw for the past 6 years. I have never had a problem with my flgr and buff set up. I used to shoot a lot of rounds through it and never had a prob.
