If the round makes noise, the mountain lion will leave. It's that simple. Even an air horn will work...and be a hilarious camp fire story. Aside from that, take a standard pressure round because you'll be shaking too much to return to POA with +P.

I live in a community at 3000' elevation in the foothills of the southern Sierras. Lots from 5ac to 19ac. The ongoing water issues have pushed the predators down to our elevation. Last week a neighbor killed a 140lb male mountain lion 75 feet or so from his back door. It was killing goats, and had gotten one of his the night before. Measured 74" nose to base of tail.

We are getting bears, coyotes, raccoons, skunk, pigs, and big cats in the development in numbers unheard of. They are not sickly, just hungry. The almost-normal rainfall this year is welcome, but this migration has developed over several years and will not end soon.

My carry gun at home is a G36, with two CCI snakeshots over five hollowpoints. Rattlesnakes are also a concern.

Just get some UNDERWOOD, DOUBLE TAP Rds. You'll be set but I guess a 9 will make him/her have a bad day if you do ran across one 3/10 you may encounter one. For a 9 is a stay home rd and for two legged person not 4, but like everyone say placement shot however when that thing is running towards you placement shot is not the answers. Those wild animals is not like being at a range where they stay still and let you shoot them, once your the target best of luck buddy.Anyhow best of luck of finding the best load for your pistol.

          Thank you

Thanks to all the helpful responders. A few clarifications:
          • I never said that I hike on Federal land. I don't. CCWing where I hike is not an issue.
          • Yes, I am talking about the 2004 attack that is mentioned here: http://tchester.org/sgm/lists/lion_attacks_ca.html . When something like that strikes close to home, it makes you think a lot about it.
          • I grew up in a very urban environment. Now I am in a very suburban / rural environment. The possibility of encountering some animal that thinks I might be a tasty treat is new to me.
          • I am not scared of nature, hence why I hike and mountain bike in it a lot now since I moved from the urban environment I grew up in.
          • Yes, I have a greater chance of encountering a meth-head (who wants to rob me for drug money) than a mountain lion. I am pretty sure I know what round will take down a meth-head.
          • The tips about carrying a knife seem to make the most sense now having learned how mountain lions behave.

          Thanks everyone!

The information given about confirmed mountain lion attacks only confirms my opinion. Worrying about mountain lion attacks is like worrying about getting struck my lightning right after winning the lottery.

Two legged predators are much more dangerous, unpredictable and common than mountain lions.

Bring an M-16 with an under-barrel M-203 grenade launcher. Load it up with armor piercing ammo and HE grenades, and don't forget to wear a bullet-proof vest. For your head and neck, wear a medieval helmet with chain-mail that extends down your neck. Besides safety and looking cool, you'll also have the benefit of enjoying a weight-lifting session and a sauna while you hike...

...jokes aside, having a dog, and/or a buddy with you seems like the best approach. Having a knife handy isn't a bad idea, either.

Maybe a motorcycle helmut with pepper spray coating would be better.
I've encountered mountain lions once in 28 years of off the road travel hiking, biking, and Jeeping. The cat ran across the trail in front of my jeep at a speed that told me if I was on foot I wouldn't have been able to react if it was after me.

Since we're talking about (mountain) lions this gives me an opening to show one of my favorite movie African lion scenes. They get it pretty accurate in it.

While turkey hunting with shot gun, I carry a G17 (ymmv) in a cross draw holster at 11 o'clock.
My theory; Best way to get at gun from fetal position with cat on your back and shoot over shoulder or around side. Ammo of your choice.

                        Lions

Pepper spray is a joke. A subcompact would be good if you have time to draw it. Against 2 legged predators would be better. My choice against a mountain lion is a knife that is not a folder.

                          9mm + 1mm = 10mm

                          Solution above for dangerous kitty.

My only encounter with a mountain lion was while I was driving home from work at about 1am. Less than a mile from my house all of a sudden I come upon one crossing the road directly in front of me running from one side of the street where houses were to the other side and into a large apartment complex. Yes, I called police dispatch who sent out a crew investigate. This is where I used to live and the city I was in was surrounded by a conservation area. Not the first time big cats had been spotted there.

Shoot a mountain lion and see what happens afterward. I hope you have a lot of money for litigation. Because those are government property
