What are my CA List options?

I'm looking for a handgun to open carry for work. No restrictions other than it must be CA legal. 10 rd mag and on the list

A few features that are must have are...

Night sights but hiviz day/night sights are preferable
Rail to add a light-very important
Ambi safety - I'm left handed. This is a must have
    45 or 9mm but would prefer 45
Cost- under $2k so custom WC and LB 1911's are out

My initial thinking is a 1911 simply because it is easy to modify to fit my needs. But I would prefer to buy one ready to go without having to modify it if possible

If it's a 1911 it must have front strap checkering which I am finding rules out a lot of options. I was originally thinking the Kimber TLE/RL but would have to add the ambi safety. Or the Tactical Entry II which seems to have everything I need and want. But it doesn't appear to be on the list. The standard tactical II is but I can't verify that the tactical (entry) II is actually on the list as well. It's not specifically listed. The list only states Tactical II?

I'm also open to other ideas. I was looking at the synthetics like Glock and SA XD's. But I have never cared for Glocks as a left hander. The mag release was never pleasant for me to operate and it can't be moved to the opposite side.

However I do prefer a handgun with an additional manual ambi safety like the 1911. So the synthetics without a manual ambi safety are less desirable to me

At this point I'm looking at any and all suggestions. I have been out of shooting for 10-15 years so I'm just trying to navigate my way around the CA list of approved handguns. I'm not even sure what all is available nowadays.

I currently have a Colt 1911 and an HK P7M8 that I can carry in the meantime but neither have a rail. So that is a main reason I'm looking for a new handgun. Yes I can use a separate flashlight but would prefer a rail mounted one to leave my weak hand free.

My company is buying it so any excuse to buy a new handgun is a good excuse.

What other handguns would fill my needs? Or what other manufacturers or models should I look at?

    CZ 75B SP-01

    Night Sights
Ambi Safety (I am pretty sure)
    Rail
    9mm
    On Roster
    6-700 bucks

A good .45 choice would be the Springfield TRP full rail.

I would get whatever you prefer to carry and shoot. Most duty weapons are carried often and shot very little.

Night sights but hiviz day/night sights are preferable
Sights are really easy to change out.

Rail to add a light-very important
Do you plan to carry a light in your holster? Rails a nice for nightstand guns, but the flashlight adds a bunch of weight to an already heavy thing that is going to be hanging off your belt.

My initial thinking is a 1911 simply because it is easy to modify to fit my needs.

It seems like you have already made up your mind. Have you looked at a commander sized gun?

I really need to look into CZ. That is one company I know absolutely nothing about. I see a lot of posts about them and a lot of high praise.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll take a look.

I have checked out the SA TRP in person. That is a heavy gun. I don't care for the Bull Brl on it. Plus I don't see a need/reason for the Bull Brl on a 5 inch Brl. I liked it but it felt like a tank in my hand! The extra weight on a carry gun matters. But doesn't totally rule it out as an option

          Thanks for the suggestions

The SP-01 pretty much fits right there. Good luck finding one though!

Weight will likely be an issue for the CZ as well. Great firearm though.

Yeah, the P-01 might be a better carry option, but it's a decocker instead of a safety I think

Yes I would carry a small additional light as a back up but need to keep my weak hand available and open.

I will be training both with the rail mounted light as well as with a secondary light in case of main light malfunction. But my main focus on training will be with the rail mount.

                  I'm not set on a 1911

It just seems like the best option that I am currently aware of for what I need

That's why I'm asking what else is out there. Things have changed in the past ten to fifteen years I've been away from the firearm scene so I want to know all my options before making the decision.

I don't mind something in the 40oz range on the high end. But the TRP is up over 43oz. I'll check to see what the CZ's come in at

If you want "something like a TRP but lighter" then look at the Springfield MC Operator, model PX9110ML. It's basically a 1/2 rail TRP without the bull barrel or the magwell. Any 1911 with a rail is going to weigh ~42 oz unless you have a lightweight frame - just for comparison a mil spec 1911 without a rail, FLGR or night sights is 39 oz.

The CZ SP-01 is also right around 40 oz. with an empty magazine.

Are all TRP on the list?

The only one I can find locally to check out is the full rail version

Correct, the CZ P-01 is a decocker. The PCR (no tac rail) is also a decocker.

The CZ75 Compact Steel frame is the on roster compact safety model.

This covers all of the on list 9mm CZ compact pistols. There is also a 75 Compact in 40 S&W that is on list.

I would suggest the Kimber TLE/RL II or TRP Operator Full Rail.
