.22 lr revolvers

what are the good economical .22 lr revolvers of choice. (the girl has expressed interest in her own gun) i know almost nothing of revolvers so when explaining why said choice is good keep the syllables down lest you force me to break out the google fu to figure out what you talking about. to preempt the "go and hold them and find the one you want" comments that's step two, step 1 is the list.

+1 on Heritage. Heritage Rough Rider is probably the cheapest one you can get, but just keep a mental note, 1) it's a single action, 2) it's not a ruger single six. But the upside is, you can have one for under $200, come with combo cylinder 22lr/22mag. The combo cylinder is really cool, cause now she can play with 22lr all day without breaking a bank and a box or two of 22mag just to feel the "kick".

I keep looking at Charter Arms and of course Smith and Wesson has MANY different models. They both have some nice stuff.

The charter arms Pathfinder in 2" and 4" are pretty neat and look relatively low cost.

Smith and Wesson has the Model 63, Model 317 and Model 617. And if you are so inclined a Model 22A in a model.

Petaluma Gun and Reloading has a consignment NEF 9-shot double-action, 6" barrel (I think), fixed sights. The only drawback of this revolver is that there is no cylinder latch, the cylinder is opened by pulling forward on the extractor rod. They're asking $150 for it and it seemed in reasonably good condition when I looked at it today.

It is a little bit of a drive for you, I realize.

My dad has a S&W K-frame 22lr. that must be about the most accurate pistol i have shot, hands down. I want one of the stainless ones for myself. I would also look for one that has a capacity to accept more than 6 rounds.

My personal thought on this is to find one that will be accurate , a new shooter will quickly loose interest if they can never hit anything . adjustable sights need to be a must . If you have a group of freinds that shoot see if you can borrow a couple of different ones for her to try .
I have a ruger single six and a ruger mark II , I think a new shooter today would be well served with either . ease of use i think would go to mark II , Alot of todays generation is not very intersted by the single action .

I wish that the 4 inch Charter Arms Pathfinder was approved. It looks like a very good gun. Charter Arms has some new products, but I don't see them on the DOJ list.

S&W Model 63. i understand they're making them again. i bought mine used last year and its a really nice revolver.

i held the 317 and didn't like the feel of it at all despite the fact i also own a model 60 .357. edited to correct typo!

If you want an accurate .22 revolver under $500, the Single Six is your best bet, IMO. The build quality is better than the Rough Rider or Bounty Hunter for not much more money. My Bounty Hunter is fun, but tends to spit from the cylinder gap. I much prefer my Single Six with two cylinders.

The inexpensive DA revolvers, like High Standard and Taurus 94, are also fun, but aren't very accurate, which limits their appeal over time. To get an accurate .22 DA revolver, you'll have to go with the Smiths, which are expensive.

You might consider a Taurus or Ruger Single Six, which you should be able to find for about $300 used. Another fun plinker, although you don't see them very often, is the H&R Top Break Model 999, and should be about the same price. They're pretty unique and hold 9 shots. Hope this helps.

A Ruger Single Six will be multi generational handgun. So will a S&W, but it will cost more. I was gifted a Single Six on my 14th birthday almost forty years ago. Of the dozen handguns I own, it is my favorite.

The Ruger Single-Six gets a two thumbs up here too. Never had a single problem with mine. Am now thinking of getting either a Ruger Mark II or III.
