Smith 39-2 Question for you guys

So I was poking around a local gun stoare today and came upon a NIB Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 9mm Nickel plated. Its in the box w/ original papers and mag, unfired.
My question for everyone is the price, they are asking $800.00 for it.
Is it worth it ? I can find little info on the net about it and no Nickel ones for sale.

Overpriced by at least $250 even here in California. There are some collectible versions of this though that will demand a premium. Venezuelan Contract version with Venazuelan crest (seal) on the right side of slide for example demands $1200 or so. So without all the details (ie serial number, special markings etc. it sounds overpriced. HTH c good

I had a plain Jane blued version - Had no idea that they were in nickel - Quick look at Gunbroker and they are in the range of 450-675 - The top end is for a NIB blued version -

I have a S&W 59-2 with the bright nickel finish, and the nickel is peeling off after 30 years, especially on the plating on the aluminum frame. Not a very durable finish.

My S&W model 39 (shown below) cost me $125 new in 1968 and I have seen guns like it selling for maybe $350 or $400 in recent years. Some of these model 39s were nickel plated and probably sell for a premium if they are in new condition. But $800 sounds a little steep to me. I might go $500 for one like you describe, if I were a collector of S&W semiautos.

I saw the pistol in question in person a few weeks ago, at that price it will be there a while as I think it is a $600 deal at best. You will probably not find the same thing anywhere else since we have the problem with the list here, but that one is over priced just the same. The worst part is that if you did buy it one magazine fired through it would likely drop the collector value by at least $150, so it is ultimately a gun that should not be fired at all if you want to preserve it's value. I would like to find an early 39 in blue as a part of my collection, but I don't think I would be willing to pay any more than about $450 tops for one.

I have a 39-2 I'd like to trade away or sell. It's a blued version. I carried it at my business for some years, but decided it was too large a handgun for small me. I bought a new, smaller S&W 9mm in SS. The 39-2 was having jamming problems at the range a few years ago, and I believe the problem is from a broken "ear" of the trigger spring. I'm not up to fixing it really.

that's not necessarily true I have a 39-2 that I bought new back in 1981, I have fired it consistently over the years and have never had one problem with it jamming, and I have never modified it. It has the nickel finish and I haven't had one problem with it peeling. to the price well its really up to who ever is willing to pay 800 for it . I paid 600 for mine back then it just depends if you really like the gun.

My second handgun was a Model 59 (teh 39's double stack brother) in Nickel and it was flawless functioning. I loved that gun.

That was 1979.

Today, for 600 bucks there are a LOT of fine modern 9mm pistols out there...
