Mag Guts for M&P Shield. Your experiences

Has anyone used the kit from mag guts with the factory shield magazines to increase capacity?

Have you had ANY reliability issues with them?

Are they reliable enough to say you would carry them?

I'm a little skeptical since they use the original base plate. I would think it might be more reliable to increase the length of the magazine as well as a different spring if you're going to increase capacity of ANY magazine..otherwise, why wouldn't smith and wesson just put that same spring at the factory and brag about more capacity? make sense?

    thanks

I guess I'm just looking to hear if anyone has had ANY issues with them...

on another forum I read that someone had a few malfunctions with the mag guts kit on his shield, but he also stated that the gun was brand new and never fired, even with the factory magazines, so I'm unsure if his issues were mag guts related..

I'm curious if these things are as reliable as the stock magazines...

I would assume they aren't as reliable, because it wouldn't make sense to me why smith and wesson doesn't adopt this design...

other than worried about defending yourself in court, can anyone see any downsides to having these mag guts kits installed?

i mean, original size magazine, 1 extra round and possibly the same reliability?

seems like a win-win to me

          thanks

            Good to go

I use Mag guts on my Shield magazines and have never had any problems with them at all. It is on my CCW rotation and I do carry it.

I've put upwards of 500 rounds through my Shield with Mag guts springs, not a single issue. As to why Smith isn't doing it, it's probably more of a if it ain't broke why fix it attitude than a concern about reliability. Well that and probably a cost factor.

S&W hasn't adopted the design because it's patented by someone else. And MagGuts makes them for several different gun types. It is a win-win. Lots of reviews out there confirming that they are good to go.

                    Ditto.

Well over 600rds by now... 300 of them in one afternoon at the NRA defensive handgun class.
No issues and they are on my carry mags.

Why would you need to defend yourself in court? They are not illegal as they do not create an 11rd magazine.
If you shoot someone, your magazine will be the least of your worries.

They technically don't use the original base... there are two plates in there, the floorplate and the cap. They keep the original cap, but replace the plastic factory floorplate with a thinner steel plate.

The longer magazine may or may not be more reliable... you still have the issue with the spring needing to maintain adequate tension from full to empty.

MagGuts uses a dual-spring design with an insert cup that allows one spring to partly telescope into the other. It's really quite a cool system, and allows adding the extra round by using this extra "give" to put off coil-bind for another 1/4"

Upgrading to a better, lighter trigger isn't illegal either, but for some reason half the people on the forums believe its a bad idea to tinker with carry guns if you have to defend yourself in court

i personally don't see upgrading things like triggers and magazine being an issue in court, but i stated that because i knew SOMEONE would bring it up

Ever been in civil court? Everything will be an issue.

Orange County told me mag guts were good to go, any modification to the pistol other than sights, including blocking out that annoying as f*** lci was a no go. I'm not sure if that was just some secretary saying her opinion over law, and we may never know until we have a test case (have there been cases involving just modifications in good shoots, or civil cases?). But I would suggest emailing them and getting that in confirmation should you be in the unfortunate situation of needing to defend yourself in court.
