Beretta 92FS vs CZ Variants

Looks like I will be going on a business trip overseas later on in the year. Area is a bit shaky, so I am authorized a sidearm to be purchased locally. My choices are Beretta 92FS, CZ variants, or any Turkish manufactured firearm like Canik etc. in 9MM.

I am leaning towards either the Beretta or CZs as I don't have as much confidence in the local firearms. Now, I have zero experience in either platform (at the risk of dating myself, M9 was adopted after my time). Modifying triggers etc. is NOT an option.

I am familiar with the DA/SA platform as my CCW firearm is an HK 45C. My concerns are working out of the box, reliability. Concealment is not a criteria either. Being on the roster would help as I would be able to purchase a similar one for familiarization and write it off as a business expense (so cost differences are not a factor).

Opinions?

The 92 FS is a full sized service handgun

For ease of carry and concealibility I think a CZ Compact or Clone would be a better option for your needs.

CZ! I brought my 92FS to the range the first day I got her and almost instantly regret not buying the CZ 75 instead. Long story short I own a CZ and I am the former owner of a 92FS

As long as concealment is not in your criteria, my suggestion is the CZ SP-01. Out of the box reliability and good trigger system.

To me, I prefer the CZ over a Beretta, but that is just what it is - preference. I have both platforms and am happy with them. Both platforms are proven worldwide, as well.

To carry on a daily basis, I think I may lean towards the CZ P-01

Sounds like an interesting gig. I myself have always wondered what it'd be like to work in that kind of environment... If I would feel like the work mattered more in the abstract once it was all said and done (vs important here is mostly making money for your bosses or keeping a job, etc)

With that being said, I'd go CZ all the way, but others I know would go beretta 92. 1 I've always shot CZ better, even before I really learned to shoot. and 2 I really don't like how the safety is also the de cocker and is also on the slide in the opposite way every other gun is (down for safe, not flip up). Which 92 or CZ variant you go with though is a different story which I cannot answer given your preferences, the assignment, or even things like the local culture/conditions you will face.

Just out of curiosity, what happens to the weapon when the trip is over? Do you get to keep it?

If so I assume it needs to be on roster, which takes out the Caniks. (which is a shame as I hear they're nice guns)

I had a Beretta 96 for years, sold it. Nothing real bad to say about it, accurate, reliable, smoothest action I've ever felt, ergonomics are just so-so for me.

I whole-heartedly recommend a CZ, SP-01 is an outstanding gun if CCW is not a concern.

If you're going to be carrying it look at the P-01, lighter alloy frame and smaller. (Not sure I'd really call it a "Compact")

Both feel like they were made from a mold of my hand, and intuitively point right where I want them to. (Whether or not I can keep them pointed there while I squeeze the trigger is another matter. )

I like the idea of getting a second one as a trainer and writing it off as a business expense.

SP-01 for sure. Slightly better out of the box plus you can bring it home and upgrade it via one of the many reputable aftermarket companies into a super-pistol or just sell it.

I've owned a baretta M9 (92FS) for years. Also recently acquired a CZ P-01. Both are great platforms.

The fit and finish, internally speaking, on CZs is a bit rough. Once you field strip one, you'll see what I mean. Nothing that affects function, but there are some sharp edges and unfinished areas. Conversely, the baretta feels like it's riding on ball bearings it's so smooth. Also, the area where cocking serrations are cut on CZs is very small. An inherent design of the way CZS work - riding inside the slide rails.

Some don't like the location of the safety on the baretta. I don't mind it.

My vote is baretta, but you can't go wrong with either. Around here, CZ fans will outnumber baretta fans 10 to 1. Keep that in mind

I prefer the 92FS over the CZ variants only because of the slide configuration. There isn't much to grab onto so you'll have to practice and get used to it versus the Beretta, which has an outer slide like your HK.

Otherwise, the two are original wonder nines and have proven themselves as completely reliable.

I had a Beretta 92FS and still have my CZ. My experience is that the CZ slide height is small so it is the slowest time for me to rack the slide when doing drills. The Beretta 92FS, on the other hand, has a safety that I had accidentally activated a few times racking the slide. Both are reliable pistols but when it comes to my life and have little time to defend myself, I'd choose the CZ over Beretta if I absolutely have to make sure it fires if I pull the trigger.

However if you can get a 92G (decocker only), I would easily choose that as a self defense pistol over the CZ. I sold my 92FS but LOVE my 92Gs.

OP, you are asking in the wrong place...as you can obviously tell.

Best thing to do is to try both guns and decide for yourself.

Another thing to keep in mind besides shooting both pistols is to field strip both pistols then put them back together. Many people missed this important factor.

To be entirely fair, there isn't all that much grip serration area on the Beretta slide, either. Slightly more than a CZ, but nothing like a Sig or HK.

I have had both and like the way both shoot. I have smaller hands so the swell on the Beretta was a bit large for me. The CZ just fits my hand better. Breakdown is easy with both.

FYI, I sold the Beretta and have a CZ75B now.
