    First Handgun in 20 Years

Yep, first new hand gun acquisition in 20 years. Long story short I put a pre-owned Ruger GP100 in jail last Saturday. Now the question beckons: What is considered a '' lockable'' case in which to bring it home where it will reside in the mandatory safe. Is a lockable soft sided handgun case acceptable or does it have to be hard sided?
    Thanks

Im not sure that the law really clarifies it, although im sure if you run into a cop who wants to be a jerk he will give you crap for having a lockable soft case.

but I keep my gp100 in a leather lockable soft case and haven't had problems yet.

im sure someone with better knowledge will chime in

A lockable case is any container that can be locked and such lock prevents the ability to extract the gun from such case.
Can be soft or hard sided. It can be the hard plastic box that the gun comes in if it has those little loops that you can lock the case with using a small lock. Even your brief case would do if it has key or combination locks.

Furthermore, I believe a trunk counts as a locked case, assuming you don't have a car with a hatchback...

Last PPT hand gun I purchased came in the card board box, I just had to have a lock to leave the store with. Once in trunk I was A OK. I guess the 10 feet from the front door to my car I was well neutral? lol Any soft or hard case that can accept a Lock or has a combo is appropriate.

The store doesn't care what you do outside of their premises. They covered their basis with making you buy a lock. In actuality, between the storefront and the trunk of the car, it needed to be in a locked container. "while being carried must be contained within a locked container." https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel

What are the chances of a cop stopping you in that 10 feet from your car? Slim to none, but there's your answer. Definitely not a neutral zone [emoji38]

                I did that yesterday.
The cop picking up yesterday didn't care.

me too I picked up a sd40ve yesterday and the store clerk asked if I had a safe and if my car had a trunk because if not they couldn't give me the gun.

they didn't make me lock the gun or anything I walked right out with the cardboard box. the first step I take I see a cop waiting for a red light he glances at me , then my box and didn't even acknowledge me he just took off when the light changed

I've been told in the past that it's either or, the gun itself has a lock through it, or it's in a lockable container, but the container can't be attached to the vehicle itself. I usually believe anything I hear, because ca laws on firearms never have to make sense to be passed. You could tell me I have to transport my firearms with the magazines inserted backwards and I'd believe it.

                      Toolbox with padlock?

I rig up a cable lock with my range bag as my locked case, though I've also used a backpack with the zippers locked together through the zipper pulls.

I'm not so sure on the "gun itself has a lock through it" part.
