out the door cost of buying a firearm(3 examples)

If Someone were to purchase a gun for 1000 dollars with these three examples, what would be an approximation of the out the door cost of each.

    1. buy a gun from a california gun store for 1000.

    2. buy a gun from a private party for 1000 then transfer it to you through a gun store

    3. buy a gun from an out of sate gun store for 1000, then transfer it to you through a california gun store

no need to be exact, just a rough estimate would be great.

    thanks

DROS fee for dealer inventory/consignment is $25, DROS fee for private party transfer is $35.
    "Firearm safety certificate" is $25
Typical dealer transfer fee is $50 - $100
Tax is charged for all dealer inventory, consignment, and transfers. Private party is non-taxed.

    1. $1130 (1000 * 1.08 + 25 + 25)

    2. $1060 (1000 + 35 + 25)

    3. $1184 ((1000 + 50) * 1.08 + 25 + 25)

      #1 = 1000 + 87.5(tax) + 35 (DROS) = $1122

      #2 = 1000 + 35 (DROS) = $1035

      #3 = [1000 + 30 (credit card fee) + 40-ish (shipping)] that is the internet portion. + 87.5(tax) + 100 (dealer transfer) + 35 (DROS) = $1292.50

PPT's are always the way to go but it's not easy to find good deals as they get snatched up very quickly. No tax and just paying the $25 DROS and $10 fee and you're good to go.

Buying from a store new, sales tax is anywhere from 8-9.75% depending on where you are at.

Buying a gun from out of state you have to pay shipping which can be free to up to $50. Then you have to pay sales tax 8-9.75% and $25 DROS and whatever FFL fee your FFL charges which can run $20-$100.

I'd say it depends though on the type of gun. A lot of CA gun stores sell firearms at or close to MSRP. Sometimes the difference is greater than buying from out of state and its associated costs.

Also. dealer transfer fees can vary greatly. Turner's charges $125 in order to discourage people from doing it, others about $50 to nothing (if you have a relationship with an FFL).

Dealers set their own transfer fees for out of state

just order what you want. do the math as every situation can be different

man you guys are way over estimating option #3....

internet puchase should be one of the cheapest if you do your part/homework.

                  1000 + tax + dros/ffl (1000+%8 (depending on county)+$45) = $1125

you should also keep in mind that the price of the same firearm in california is usually much higher than the same firearm from a good online shop so your not taking that into account. i just bought ruger gp100 match champion. and the price online was at least $100 bucks cheaper than any place locally.

if your not getting free shipping your buying from the wrong places. if you're getting charged more than 45-50 bucks for the ENTIRE transfer including dros your FFL is terrible and you should look for another.

Sorry for a minor hijack. FFLs are required to do PPTs (whether they like it or not) but am I correct that they're not required to do out of state transfers? They can certainly set their own fee if they do it.

Isn't it $25 DROS? $35 is PPT with $10 going to the dealer, that one at least is regulated. Although it seems some dealer's are pushing the boundaries on that one, and making it up as they go along.

Clearly he's NOT talking about comparison shopping of gun prices. He is asking about the associated FEES in each instance for a $1000 purchase. In his post, he is stating the GUN COST is $1000 in each example.

The examples are set up to favor PPT. Price of the gun being equal in all three examples will always have the same outcome PPT Cost<Local FFL Cost<Internet Cost. You can probably get more gun on an internet purchase....

In general yes, but it really depends on what gun you want to get and what price you can get it at. I bought a Buckmark online and the OTD price after fees and rebate was $100 cheaper then my local store and $70 cheaper than what someone on here was selling theirs for.
My FFL only charges $20 transfer fees so I shop online first.
