    Maintaining S&W 5906 -- UPDATE post #49

I was finally able to snag a 5906 and I have heard parts may be hard to come by. I did a search but didnt really find what I was looking for. For those with any experience with this model, what can you tell me about general maintenance or good practices with these S&W semi-autos? What parts should I stock up on? If I decide to change the sights out, are there any good ones to look at? Any advice is appreciated!

I'll get some more pictures up when I pick it up, but as always,

I've never had any issues with mine. I replaced the springs a while back, I think I got them at Wolff. They are pretty tough guns. A little heavy but accurate and fun.

Haven't had any problem with my all stainless 5906. It is heavier than the aluminum frame model. Probably buy mags you can snag as there aren't too man out there. You can convert mags made for SA XD 9mm.

What a cool looking pistol. Resembles the Browning Hi Power.

3rd gen Smiths are stout. A spring set is a good to have. Hard parts are nearly impossible to find. S&W stopped production a while back and what they still have they keep for warranty and\or LE guns.

Any 10 round mags, especially factory Smith, you come across, buy.

Smith-wessonforum.com/ is the place for all your 3rd gen needs. Lots of great info, parts, etc.

JT, seeing those stippled factory grips is Even those are hard to come by.

Do not jamb the cleaning brush down hard on the mag well. There is a small spring, or little clip on the trigger bar, its held on by a rivet. It will bend and cause the trigger to click, or make noise.
It's not a safety issue but you can't fix it easily. The little rivet is out of stock.
I found a new trigger bar with everything already installed. I replaced it myself, and the noise is gone.

Pull the slide back and lock it, look down from the top, looking forward, you can see the spring on the trigger bar, the spring/clip is split in the middle.
I think all 3rd gen s&w have it.

                Great gun

Oh ya mags can be found for under 25 buck, factory 10 rounders

Those stippled grips came from a 4006. I have the original grips inside the original box with all the accessories.

Are there any after market sights worth looking into?

I put Trijicon night sights on a 5903TSW and they're good and bright (if thats what you need).
I still have the factory three dots (Novak low pro) on the 5906 and for normal use I don't find them lacking at all.

Side plates and extractors (they have to be fit to the pistol so you may need a few) are the biggest items.

Wolff makes a spring replacement kit that is advisable to get. I have them for all of my 3rd gen Smiths.

mags are no problem, MecGar still makes 10, 15 and 18 round mags and they are pretty cheap.

The one I picked up had adjustable sights. Maybe my quarrel with them was that they looked dirty and hard to pick up. Some three dot night sights would be nice though.

Finally had an opportunity to pick it up. I had a few questions regarding it. The trigger and hammer I noticed were the same finish as the rest of the gun but on others I have seen they have a black hammer/trigger. Are these aftermarket or maybe just features of an earlier model? Also I noticed what I thought was the front sight being a littled discolored, but it actually looked to be a very dim/dark yellow vial. Maybe a night sight at one point? Thanks in advance, just trying to figure out if these are stock options or not. Here's a better picture..although it's still from a smartphone camera.
