    Might be moving to CA

I'm from MD and might be moving to CA. I have a couple of rifles and handguns and am not sure if I can bring them with me. I have an AR rifle, a couple of AK rifles, and a VZ 2008. On the handguns side, I have an HK P7, an Hk45, an HK P30L, a Springfield TRP Operator, a Dan Wesson Specialist, A cZ PCR, a CZ 75B, A Ruger GP100, a Ruger Wiley Clapp, A SW 686, A Sig 228, 226 and 220, a Walther PPQ. Can I bring these with me? Also, what is the best way of transporting them? I also have a safe that I need to bring with me and some ammo I have accumulated over the years.

In general transport across state lines require that the weapons be secured in a locked container ( not the glovebox) unloaded and separate from all ammunition

The roster doesn't apply to him. He isn't purchasing the off roster guns here from a FFL. He already owns them. As for the handguns you can't bring in hi cap mags with them. You can either block the mags to 10 rounds or replace them with 10 round mags. On the ARs, AK and the VZ2008 they have "EVIL" features like a pistol grip so you will need to install mag locks and use 10 round mags with them. Within 60 days you are suppose to register your guns with the DOJ when you move here also.

In MD, I also am not able to buy new pistols and rifles with hi cap mags. But I can drive to PA or VA and legally buy hi cap mags. Same thing with hi cap AR, AK, and VZ mags. Weird. Can the same thing be done by a CA resident?

Actually, the roster does "apply" to him. He should buy whatever he wants that isn't on the list before he moves, because he won't be buying them here after the move.

                      No.
                      Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

The part in bold is not true. Here are the guidelines.
Federal law does not restrict individuals from transporting legally acquired firearms across state lines for lawful purposes. Therefore, no federal permit is required for the interstate transportation of firearms.

                          The short answer is no.

The detailed answer is yes you can travel to any state and buy them but you can't bring them back. If you bring it back you are technically importing a high capacity magazine which is a felony (maybe misdemeanor?). However if you were to steal a high capacity magazine in CA it's only a misdemeanor.

Trigger locks and cable locks mean nothing when transporting. Need to be in locked case with ammo separate under federal law when transporting interstate.

That's only part of it on the rifles. In California there are certain rifles that are banned by specific name. If you are unfortunate enough to own any of those rifles you can't bring them in. If you make it past that step and we're talking about evil rifles like AR's and AK's, you will either need to outfit them with a bullet button before you bring them across state line or convert them over to what is called featureless...which means buying a contraption that converts the pistol grip to a non pistol grip, etc.

Here are some links that will help...the Calguns Wiki page on moving to California with guns and the Semi Auto Rifle flow chart. Brace yourself OP. The laws are crazy here and you will need to spend some time educating yourself. Read through the info and let us know where you have questions. We're all pretty helpful around here as long as you do your part.

                              Welcome to the forum btw!
