Broken BHP recoil spring guide assembly

I just stripped my brother's BHP and discovered the reason why I couldn't get the thing apart without using a nylon hammer... the recoil spring guide assembly is broken! Crap!

    Here is a pic.

Does anyone have an idea why this happens? Also, where can I get a good and sturdy replacement at a decent price? Numrich has it at 35 bucks or so, fudge!

    Wow, that looks terrible...
Did you "nylon hammer" the slide catch out?

The slide stop pin is supposed to go through the ring at the end of the recoil guide. The ring looks like it was collapsed by impact. I would guess that the gun was reassembled with the ring in front of the slide stop pin, which I didn't know could be done, but that's the only explanation I have. Then when the gun was fired, the tunnel in the slide that the guide rod goes into (which is solid at the front) impacted the guide rod driving the ring back into the slide stop pin and collapsing it. Check the slide stop pin for impact marks.

Just in case you don't have a spare laying around:
These files are schematics and parts lists from our catalog. They are in PDF format which means you can save the schematic to your computer, zoom in or out on

I bought my buddy's mk3 BHP and found he had done the same thing. I bought one from Browning and paid $35 for it so that seems to be the going price.

Fudge. The question remains is how that happens. Does this ever happen in the 1911?

No because the barrel link is what the slide stop goes through on a 1911.

It's not a typical problem on BHP's for this to happen; its caused by improper assembly by people that aren't paying attention or don't know what they're doing.

                RTFM FTW.

Yup, looks like user error upon putting it back together. That sucks, hope you get it put back together the right way since the other person failed to do so.

Red is absolutely right about the 1911 issue too, nice thing about the 1911's and being able to see through the other side when installing the slide lock/release

remember that you pull the BHP slide back (to where the slide stop would engage the slide if it were installed), then pull it back even farther before re-inserting the slide stop.

your brother probably forgot about pulling it back farther and beat that stop back into the frame... causing the damage to the guide rod.

it's probably a good thing your brother didn't go shooting alot... the frame and slide could have been exposed to unnecessary abuse.

Guys, lay off a little.. everyone makes mistakes. I've never seen this happen but have heard this is a common mistake with BHP's.

I apologize, my tongue in cheek (although lacking any emoticon) comment wasn't intended for Pullinshoot who just got the pistol in that condition, but just a general comment that people that are unsure of how to reassemble something should consult the manual.
