    80% pistol frames

Sorry in advance if this has already been addressed but...

Do the same rules apply to 80% pistol frames that apply to the 80% AR lowers? They are legal to own as long as you do the finishing mill work and keep it CA compliant?

Yes, it is legal as long as you do all the work to make it into a dimensionally compliant (minimum 6" barrel length + 10.5" overall length) bolt-action single-shot pistol or into a dimensionally complaint (minimum 6" barrel length + 10.5" overall length) break-top/open single-shot pistol or into a CA legal (does not violate CA assault weapons and SBR laws) rifle or into a CA legal (does not violate CA assault weapons and SBS laws) shotgun.

So long guns aside, what you're saying is, in CA, you can't own a fully functional, semi-auto, 10 rd mag equipped handgun that you built from an unregistered 80% frame?

After you make it ca compliant, you can then convert it to a semi auto handgun with a 10 round magazine

Do you require to keep the original compliant parts after the conversion? The single shot configuration is kind of a pain to use. And I am not sure I want to keep the extra part.

I don't know anyone that was required to keep the long .22 barrel when they used the SSE to buy off roster guns before. Why would you have to keep parts layin around if you are not using them.

Thanks Mosin. I just don't know the law well enough to assume. I don't know if I will be required to prove that I build it with .22 long barrel then convert it later. Kind of wonder since I read many constructive purpose comments in the other thread earlier.

I'd be very careful about accepting this advice.

There is no published case law holding that this practice as legal, and, so far as we know, no one has been prosecuted under PC 32000 for making a single shot handgun into a semi-auto.

However the legality of the practice is predicated on the theory that a person "Manufacturers" a single-shot handgun in compliance with the law (which is still possible) and then "converts" it to semi auto. This theory only works if the "manufacturing" and "conversion" operations are distinct from each other.

There has been a published decision from the Fourth Circuit that conflicts with this theory. It's not binding on California courts, but a California court would likely adopt the same reasoning. There is also pending legislation in Sacramento that, if passed, would define "manufacturing" to include the steps in converting the SSE to semi-auto.

So the only way for me to build an 80% semi auto pistol is to build it as a single shot or break barrel? Cuz I was looking into the Poly 80 Glock lower. Not sure now though...

I have my fair share of 80% AR lowers and I'm a little nervous about those given the recent "climate change" regarding those!

Thanks for all the input guys!

There is no published easy method of manufacturing a single shot compliant polymer 80 glock. It hasn't been hashed out on calguns yet. There isn't much interest from manufacturers to make single shot kits because they know our legislators will ban them as soon as it gains any traction.

                          Not quite correct.

You can lawfully build a single-shot handgun that is "Break-Top" or "Bolt-Action" and that meets the dimensional requirements of statute.
