    Striker problem with M&P 45

When I press the striker block down and push the striker forward, it stays forward, but will freely move back manually and engage the block again. If I dry fire it, the striker stays forward until racking the slide.

This caused a couple issues at the range this morning. I fired, the slide cycled properly but the next trigger pull was a dead trigger. Pulled the slide back enough to verify that I had a loaded cartridge, pulled the trigger again and got a 3 round burst. Mind you, I tend to trap the trigger to the back with each shot so the sear would have been engaged, allowing the burst.

I pulled the striker out and noticed that it doesn't have the little spring between the plastic part and the back of the striker which would spring the striker back to the rear after each fire. My other M&Ps do, but they are not 45 caliber. I plan to call S&W tomorrow, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

The gun only has about 150 rounds through it and this just started happening.

Time to Call S&W and sent it back for eval. They will fix it and get it back to you pretty quickly.

      My M&P 45 has a spring.

Did you buy the gun new or used?

I bought it new just before SSE went away.

You can see the little coils of the rear spring on this 9mm slide.

This 45 slide does not have that spring pushing the striker back to the rear position, so the striker will stay forward until the slide is cycled. The striker on the 9mm springs back as soon as I let it go. The striker has never been removed until yesterday. I should mention that this has an Apex FSS kit installed.

          My 45 M&P has a visible spring.

That striker safety plunger doesn't look like a factory original. It looks like it was polished. Did you replace the plunger? Maybe something is binding.

Yes, the striker block (safety plunger) is Apex. On the 45, when you press striker block and move the striker forward, does it spring back when you let it go?

If the 45 is supposed to have a striker return spring, I'm having a hard time understanding how it could simply disappear.

my first guess would be that it flew off when the Apex Striker Block was installed

It couldn't have, the striker assembly was never removed and the striker return spring can only be removed after pulling the assembly out.

It sounds like someone attempted to instal the Apex competition spring kit, which includes a striker spring, but then somehow put it back together without the replacement spring. That seems strange, but if it was worked on a mistake could happen.

I would pull the stiker out and if there is no spring, just get the part.

FYI, some people have reported light primer strikes with the competition striker spring when using certain hard primers, so you may want to go with the factory spring depending on your use.

I installed the trigger, trigger return spring, sear and sear spring, striker block and striker block spring. The striker assembly was never removed.

I've talked to 2 different people at S&W and they both said, it's normal for the striker to remain forward after a dry fire. Neither of them could answer whether or not the striker assembly should have a striker return spring which is on the 40 and the 9mm.

I put a call in to Apex and it sounds like they are going to be of some assistance here. The lady I spoke with sounded much more knowledgeable and helpful than both of the S&W reps. I'll report back if I find a solution to this.

A gunsmith at Apex called me and said that the striker return spring absolutely needs to be installed on the 45. He said that he's seen at least half a dozen NEW M&P 45s sent to him missing that spring. He offered to send me one along with a new sear and continue troubleshooting the issue. Can't beat that customer service.
