1911 and Colt

Everything but Colt 1911s get a lot of attention at this forum. RIA, Kimber,Springfield. .


Why is that?

I have no idea to the reason why for those other brands. But the reason I switched to all Springfield 1911s is because of their customer service. I currently own the SA EMP 9mm, MC Operator, LW Operator, and just put a LW Champion Operator in jail.

• EMP - Had issues with feeding JHP so I sent it back to SA no charge. It's 100% now
• MC Op - Is currently at SA for some custom work
• LW Op - 150 rounds through it, no issues. I'm actually selling this one because I just picked up the Champion Op
• LW Champ Op - Soooo in love

Funny how much you hear about how good Springfield's customer service is. To me that means they have a lot of problems that need to go back for repairs (and I have a few SA, so not bashing). In 50+ years of gun ownership I have yet to send a gun in for customer service.

As for Colt, only having one gun left on the roster might have something to do with the lack of popularity. Try putting up a Series 70 Colt up for sale though and see how fast it is picked up.

Colt autos have fallen off the roster. New/used ones are hard to find unless
sold by PPT. The other three makes you mention are still on roster and are
less costly then Colt (in equal configuration/options). You will hear about
paying for the Colt name and in a lot of cases that's true,on the flip side
Colt will hold its value a lot better then the others. Pete

Personally, I never understood why Colts are more expensive, and why their grip safeties seem to be so low in the back, placing the hand lower than others. This could be just in my head though.

I just wanted a 1911 that was made well and looked good to me. A have no interest in changing anything but the grips. I am on a budget [ retired ] and was not going to spend a lot on a 1911. I paid 518 for my tac 5 RIA 1911 in 45 ACP. I am 100 % satisfied with it. I put on a pair of quality double diamond rosewood grips on it ,cheapo gun show mags function just as good in my 1911 as the expensive ones do. I have tried many brands of ammo in it including re loads without a single malfunction.

As others have said, lack of availability in California is the most contributing factor. If you look at 1911 forums that are "nationwide" you'll find a strong Colt following. On the other hand, Springfield and RIA are also quite popular nationally too.

Because Colt is just a name, and they don't do it any better than the others.

I have a Colt 1911 Combat Elite from the 80s; its in my opinion nothing special.

I keep it because itcwas from my dad.

Many times customer service is used to replace that spring that flew across the garage during detail strip or the baseplate you cracked on the concrete while running and gunning. It has been my experience that SA CS is very easy to deal with when this happens: they send you the part you need, no charge and no questions asked.

I would totally pick up the new Colt's that were introduced in recent years. They seem to be more competitive in pricing for what you get now vs competitive models. Sadly we can not at a reasonable price.

My stable contains 5 Springfields currently, with a sixth having been sold off at some point. Never had an issue that required warranty work on any of them. I have a Colt and a Kimber too but Springfield is my go-to brand for production 1911s.

Colt has only one 1911 on roster. I have a defender, and it is a great shooter. But you can tell on some aspects, like the inspection mark they leave on the pistol, that their QC has gone down the toilet. SA on the other hand is always there to right any wrongs. And you have SACS if you ever choose to upgrade your pistol.
