Handgun Safety Courses

Hello,

New member here..

I live in the South San Jose area and I am hoping to get some feedback on local handgun safety courses. I am a first time gun owner, in fact I pick up my Springfield XD9 tomorrow. I have very little experience and I am looking to learn, any advice is much appreciated.

I would suggest Reeds. They have an NRA First Steps Pistol class. They provide the gun and ammo. Help you with all of the basics. Get up to speed with that course, then take another one of their courses.

Welcome to the shooting sports!!!

Your best buddy is dry fire. But even then, you need to learn how to do that right too. Can be fatal if not. Learn the cardinal gun safety rules first. Become religious about clearing your weapon. Never get complacent.

I haven't heard of that.

I would start with the basics first. Walk, the run so to speak.

Some community colleges have the basic firearms familiarity classes. They can be very in-depth, yet designed for the beginner. Not sure if evergreen community college offers them. The amount of information, along with the range time is very cheap and the focus is around safety. The NRA is a good resource. Private companies will provide more specific - "get you up and going" much faster type training and most likely will cover all the basic safety items (research reviews and get recommendations in your area). I suppose the key is just get the confidence that you can handle your weapon safely and then move it to were you can keep the weapon trained on target with stress (for self defense) (target shooting is much less demanding since no need for holsters). It takes some time and there are some who think they can handle their weapon and in reality don't. That is scary. Training is great and glad you are doing it the right way. Get good training and then you won't have to go back and get rid of bad habits which I had to do.

You have made the correct first step in seeking advice and training. I don't know what you overall experience is with firearms, but I would suggest getting some snap caps, so you can get used to loading and handling your firearm following the safety rules without the use of live ammo.

Nice pick, my first handgun I was and XD subcompact 40. Which I still have guys my hands pertty well cause I have small hands but still my favorite over the other 3 handguns I have but you'll learned to love it or not.

You are certainly getting started on the right foot. If you have rented guns at Reeds before, that is a good place to take your formal training class as well.
There are a great number of gun safety videos on Utube. Watch them. They are free and helpful, but not a substitute for a class with an instructor.
Forget about any tactical/tacticool training for now till you get passed the basics and become proficient in handling and shooting a hand gun.
