    non registered firearm registation

when I was a senior in high school, so 88-89, I traded some wheels for a old 22 cal single action pistol. don't remember make model etc don't have it in my possession to even look at it. I know now that 1) I was under 21, 2) did not go through ffl, and 3) do not know the origin (ie. stolen, works, etc) is there any way to register it, find out if it stolen , whatever.

I was just thinking of my first gun in another thread and I said that my 92fs was my first gun , but that would be my first legal gun. lol

    thanks

In '88 or '89, that sounds like it was legal if you were 18.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Ca law still allows for 18 year olds to own handguns. In '88 or '89, it was a perfectly legal transaction. There is no legal requirement to register it at all. If you really want to "register" it, there is a vol reg form that you can fill out and pay the state for the privilege of telling them that you legally own the gun but, WHY?

          Exactly.
Why make it easier for the .gov to steal your property? Undocumented firearms carry a special premium for their owners. It is not their business that you did something totally legal way back when.
If you no longer own it, forget about it.

            joeymfd,

Please share the PM you received (with the sender's name redacted) and PMed me about. I think it would be good to show how paranoid and ignorant some people are of the laws.

I will let you know that until 1-1-91 FTF sales of handguns were perfectly legal and the only way to do a PPT in CA. It is still legal for an 18 year old in CA to own a handgun and, back then, buying one FTF was the easiest legal way of getting one. You broke no laws and the gun does not require registration of any kind unless, it is a CA defined AW which a revolver isn't. Anyone who tells you differently is not educated on the subject and is feeding you FUD.

OP, some of the older guns didn't even have serial numbers. I could be wrong but I think it was in the late 60's when the gov started making manufactures add the numbers.

If you don't have it, and don't know what happened to it, why are you worried about it?
"It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.

CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols." ~~ Quiet

I agree. Many people are very paranoid and have no knowlege of the laws. Paperless handgun transfers were 100% legal in Ca before 1991. There was a time when new residents were not required to register their guns when they moved to Ca. Paperless transfers are STILL practiced in most of the country between individuals. The are tons of handguns in Ca today that do not trace to their owners. There are many guns that were brought into the country prior to 1968 that never got recorded anywhere .

The question having been asked and correctly answered, closed - as legal questions are better handled in the legal forum.
