Looks like the old S&W revolver sights like a lot of old time 1991s had.

Yes they are S&W sights. A few gunsmiths would do that back in the day.

I think it was a smith named Armand Swenson that started the use of S&W sights on autos. I think he did a lot of Colt 1911's that way. I am sure that he did high powers as well.
Are there any marking on the gun? As I recall Swenson put his name on the bottom inside of the slide.

          Nope that isn't factory.

That is a a S&W rear sight (likely K-frame) and you can tell were they rounded off the front of the leaf spring.

It was a very popular modification, done by a lot of smiths, as the factory adjustable rear sight was really horrible and there wasn't enough material in the slide to bury a Bo-Mar.

The problem is that the slide of the P-35 was so light and the recoil so violent that it would sometimes shear off the mounting screws of something heavier like the Bo-Mar rib

Do these sights add or subtract from the value of the gun?

Unfortunately the guns barrel is bulged on the top just past the chamber.

Update. Photo added of underside of slide.
A bulged barrel can be replaced. BHP barrels can be a bit pricey, but a used for $100.00 shouldn't be too hard to find.

Regarding adding to or detracting from value, if the gun was in like new condition I'd say the modification detracts. Since it's not I think it gives the gun a bit more versatility and adds a touch $$$. Not alot either way.

FWIW, after replacing the barrel my approach would be to keep it as is and use it as an all purpose, go anywhere shooter - or get it refinished, maybe hard chrome or Robar & looking nice.

Great find! Clean her up, learn to serivce & disassemble (a good source of info is the Hi Power sub-forum on the 1911Forums), and re-spring with a kit from these guys: http://bhspringsolutions.com

Surplus barrels are available, dont need to get the factory new ones at $$$$$$.

Here is a photo pf my 1970's-ish Commander built by King's Gunworks, back in the day when they did quality custom work and made a lot of after-market accessories, like ambi safeties, etc. All major parts are stamped with their crown logo. It has the S&W rear sight installed.

As a point of reference, the factory Hi Power adjustable sights (at least on my 70's era model) have a "barrel" with a screw slot on each side of the sight. Screw one in the other out to change windage.

My Commander has an oval containing a crown and a capital K stamped on the left side of the slide, just below the S&W sight, and also on the barrel bushing, trigger, recoil spring plug, etc. Perhaps they didn't do that if they just did the rear sight. This is, by the way, my most accurate centerfire handgun - beating all my S&Ws, various 1911s and a Python.

In any case, I'd be happy with your BHP and would find a good new barrel for it.

If I remember correctly, Mr. Swenson usually installed a second screw thru the forward end of the rear sight just aft of the forward screw. Still within the "unsprung" portion.
