Deadhorse? Resolved? - Catastrophic failures? - kB!

I am researching handguns and about to buy a Glock G30 .45 ACP
but I found some disturbing reports about catastrophic failures of Glocks here Glocks kB! FAQ v1.35 but it also says:
    5. Do kB!s occur in other guns or just in Glocks?
kB!s do, of course, occur in other guns, but no one appears to be keeping accurate statistics for most of them. Many 1911-style handguns have partially unsupported case mouths, and numerous case separations have occurred in these guns...
So I ask, Anyone experience this?

More... Overpressure Rounds in G21SF, kB! Endnotes, and Glocks kB!, 2001

    Thanks,

    Grip

    Merry Christmas

    Wow, not another

An overpressure round in most handguns will cause that kind of failure. Buy it, shoot it, and be happy.

My daughter blew up my Glock 17 a couple of weeks ago. Consensus is that the gun was able to go off while slightly out of battery. Cracked the frame, blew the slide stop lever into oblivion, but no damage to slide or barrel/chamber.

G21's specifically had issues with the Portland PD. Back in 2003 or 2004 they had several KB's when their NEW G21's were fed federal hydroshock 230 grain ammo. Federal pointed the finger and Glock, glock pointed their finger and Federal. Portland now issues a few different 9mm glock pistols.

Check here for some news articles posted regarding the issue.

Yes, all guns can have a KB.
Yes, I sold my G21 I was carrying in duty that I fed with department issued 230grn hydro shocks.
No, I did not go back to carrying the then normal isue Sig P220.
No, I did not regret buying a $800 H&K USP 45f and carrying it with the same ammo every day and shooting every week to stay proficient with.
Yes, I felt a lot better at the end of the day.

In the end, its what makes you feel warm and fuzy at the end of the day.

Personally, I would stay with something with a fully supported chamber just for peace of mind and reloaders will thank you if you don't keep your brass now.

all guns KB. glock has the most prominent track record out of any manufacturer though.

if you do alittle research into the design, you will learn the glock barrel is actually a piss poor performer. it doesn't have enough chamber support for rounds, especially higher powered rounds like the 40 S&W where the limits are already being pushed. which is interesting, since glocks are supposed to handle even +p

as you can see by the picture, the top of the barrel seems to have split away in a vertical fashion. this is the most common KB you will notice

why did this happen? lack of chamber support. look at the pictures below to see, and pay close attention to the bottom 6' o clock position of the brass near the rim. the first two pics show the worst chamber support, while the bottom two show the best.

bad ju ju for reloads. commercial loads can do it as well. but because reloaded brass is often weaker this can increase the likelihood of KB

my advise, buy a glock if you want. but buy a barrel with it.

All major caliber Glock barrels have deep throats:

From left: Glock 21 factory, Glock 30 factory, KKM 21 thread for comp, Jarvis 21 6", Wilson 21

                Another view:

Deep throat equals unsupported case, high pressure or weak brass = Kb.

Get a good quality aftermarket barrel and you're gtg.

So what barrels would be good replacements for the Glocks.

Can someone provide links to good replacements

If my G19 blows up, I'll be sure to let you know. I wouldn't hold your breath, though.

No aftermarket barrel will stop a casehead rupture if your Glock fires out of battery. The gun is designed to keep the barrel/slide locked through the dwell time so that the pressure drops before the gun unlocks. If you allow the gun to fire out of battery, you cause instant unlock where the pressure is still too high and the casehead lets go.

Keep your gun clean and well maintained.

No one's yet mentioned that the 9mm
Glock chambers appear to be supported just fine. No issues here after 10 years of reloads.

Well, my G17 blew up last month. No barrel/slide damage, but it completely cracked the frame.
