22 Target Pistol

I'm thinking of getting a 22 target pistol and I'm looking at the Ruger Hunter. Anyone have any problems with the Ruger or is there a different option to consider?

I've got a S&W, Ruger, and Browning .22 semi-automatic pistols and the Browning is better than the other two. The Buckmark Varmint has a wonderful adjustable trigger, cleans very easy, and a fine barrel. I got the model that requires a scope as there are no iron sights provided. The Ruger is a bear (and a half) to clean. I replaced it's trigger with a Volquartsen and it's likely the equal of the Browning now. The S&W really isn't a target pistol but I've hung a scope off of it for many years and it did fine but not equal to the Browning with its nice target quality barrel.

I have a Neos all black with the 6" barrel and I love it. I wold highly recommend it, never get PMC ammo for it though but it loves the CCI blazer. I think I paid a little over 300 for it plus the cost of the bushnell red dot I put on it. The best thing of all though is how accurate it is, when I have time to take some nice pictures that it deserves I'll post them.

I have a Sig Trailside and a Buckmark Camper, and they're both great. I had a S&W 22a with 6" slab barrel, and it was a great shooter, particularly for how cheap it was - $200.

I have a Buckmark and I love it. Easy to clean and shoots very well. I made a custom optics rail mount for it. here is a pic...

My Sig Trailside 4.5" target model is very nice. I have also tried my friend's Ruger MkII Bull Barrel and it is also very nice. I can kick a 12 ga. shell at around 10 yards all day long with it.

S&W 22s

I like my 22s. It came with a 7" barrel (I changed it to a 5")I got it for $75 and and put a tasco red dot on it. You can damn near drive nails with it. It's a little picky on the ammo, I'm still looking a for a good brand the federal match is working ok lately. Overall I am very happy with it!

I think the new model is the 22a

I have a Ruger MKII Comp Target SS Slab and Its awesome, easy to clean. It came with an adjustable site and also a rail & rings for a scope. the only thing I hear about the new MKIII is that its a bit harder to clean due to the new loaded chamber safety added item. FYI i will be adding my Ruger on Gunbrokers in the next few days if you are looking a good used one..

I Absolutely Love S&w Model 41's

Here's a vote for the S&W Model 41. I like the 5 1/2" heavy barrel. I enjoy rimfire and I always take a 41 whenever I go shooting. Buy a cool pistol, you will only cry once!

For a target 22 you also have to consider a Marvel conversion for a 1911. It's widely known to be one of the most accurate .22's out there.

The high Standard (old) supermatic citation series is also an excellent target gun with one of th ebest triggers on any pistol, period. And it has quick-swappable barrels. The catch is, you have to find one in CA.

The high end trailside pistols are supposed to shoot well too.

I don;t have any experience with the buck mark series, but the Ruger Mk2 makes a decent target pistol. Not in the same league as the S&W41 or High Standard though.

^ Those Hamden guns are something aren't they? Those are examples of American craftsmanship when people actually gave a damn about making quality stuff back then.

The S&W 41 and a MKII of some kind are still on my "hitlist".

The High Standards are indeed fine pistols. I've got an H-D military model thats among my favorite to shoot. It makes it way out to the range with me everytime.

I read a while back that during Vietnam many AF pilots holstered a suppressed H-D incase they went down.

Mine looks similar to this, except it has a thumb rest/shelf on the left handgrip:



It's one amazingly accurate piece of art and I can knock 12 guage shells off a stand at 25 yards with ease.

Since they aren't on the Roster of Approved Handguns for sale however, they are difficult if not impossible to find (the Citation Supermatics, Duramatics, or the H-D Military models).

A little more history:

The Central Intelligence Agency, successor to the OSS, used a silenced High Standard HD military pistol. Francis Gary Powers, pilot of the U-2 reconnaissance plane shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960, carried the silenced HD when he was captured.

I've got a High Standard Victor, and recommend it with no reservations. The S&W 41 is a fine piece as well with better workmanship. I will have one of those too one day! It was actually the first handgun I ever shot when my neighbor took me and my dad to the range for the first time. These are probably two of the finest production target pistols that can be bought without breaking the bank. The Ruger is not even close!

Trailside 22

I have the Target model. It is the gun that goes with me everytime. Fun to shoot, and more accurate than I am. I had the Ruger, not as accurate, trigger not as clean/crisp, too much trouble to clean.

I know Trailside's are distributed by Walther now, not Sig. They may be harder to get until the logistics are worked out.
