    Taurus PT 1911

I know this gun is new to the market and is not available to CA yet but I just read a good article in the NRA mag American Rifleman about this gun. It has a lot of nice features for the pice. $600.00

    - Forged Frame and Slide
    - Heinie Straight 8 sights
    - 30 l.p.i checkering on the front strap and MSH.
    - All of the loaded goodies like extended beavertail, lowered and flared ejection port, one piece guide rod, ambi safety, full length trigger, target hammer, bevelled mag well
    - It does have an internal extractor
    - Two eight round mags.
    - from the pic in the mag there appears to be checkering on the trigger guard also.

The acuracy looks pretty good also. In a five shot group at 25 yds, they average 1.84 inches using various ammo.

The only complant is the trigger is on the heavy side at 6lbs, 3 ozs but breaks clean.

I do believe this an 80 series pistol.

This is the first Taurus that has actually recieved my attention. Just wondering if anyone else had read the article.

Yes, I read it. Not being a 1911 guy (someday! not soon, though) I don't know how to evaluate it. Did you see the ad right in front? Taurus seems to think there's something like $1500 worth of mods on it (misplaced the magazine, can't give the exact figure just now).

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

There is a discussion on the falfiles.com about it. They said a majority of the parts (frame and slide) was Brazilian made. Springfield uses some Brazilian parts, I can't remember if it was the slide or the frame.

        Its the frame

I don't know about that gun. I have never liked their semi-autos but love their revo's. Its something I'm going to have to hold before I can say anything good or bad.

On thing I just noticed.....there is not chamber load indicator or a mag safety lock. Can this pistol even be sold here?

I just got my Riflemen mag and read the review. Looks nice but pictures can lie. i'd love to hold one or even test fire one.

Taurus has to put it thru the usual CA BS before it can be sold here. BUt it does have a safety lock, If you look at 1 of the picturtes in AR, you'll see a key sticking up in front of the hammer.
As for the "value" of all the mods, Look up the parts at Wilson Combat or Ed Brown, then add gunsmithing costs
This seems like a good deal
If its as good as their revolvers, then this will be a bargain.

Oh ok. I thought the law was either a chamber load indicater or a mag drop lock.

You are correct (needs either a magazine disconnect or a chamber loaded indicator). And, starting Jan 1, 2007, all newly added pistols will need to have both.

So then it can't be sold here.

Actually, except the Pro's, Springfield uses ALL Brazilian parts. Imbel (http://www.imbel.gov.br/) makes the Springfields and they are known as a very good arms company in the world. The Mil-Specs and Loadeds are now assembled in Brazil and imported complete (they say made in Brazil under the dust cover.) The TRP's and above are assembled in Genesco. The Pro's use the Imbel frames and slides.

If the gun has a serial number beginning with an N, it is fully imported. If it begins with an NM, it was assembled in Illinois. Some of the earlier Mil-Specs were put together here and have the NM number and one piece barrels.

The ATF stats no longer consider the SA 1911's as manufactured in the US. Only the Custom Shop guns are "manufactured" here and are listed under the owner's name, David Reese. They show about 1800 guns made. SA sells about 40K - 50K 1911's.

Taurus is a separate Brazillian company. It will be interesting to see if they get one approved before the dreaded mag disconnect comes to pass.
