The above might convince me after my tax return.

It's a great gun. Very fun to shoot and easy to upgrade. I've replaced some springs to make super light trigger pull and added front fiber optics sight.

You'll need to get extra moon clips and (probably) a tool to load them. I'm using "Moon Clip Tool," (they also sell clips,) but there are others. Search for a recent thread on 929...

Get some Ranch Products Moon Clips and you don't need any tools to load or remove the ammo.

I'm new to revolves so can't give you an honest opinion yet. I have one and put about 24 rounds through it. Installed a Picatinny rail and a Burris FastFire III. Haven't sighted it in yet but will report back when I do.

I have one and its a lot of fun to shoot.
You don't need loading and removal tool if you don't want to spend some money. I used a deep socket long nose plier and a flat screw driver. Works really well. Fast as well.

Can you shoot this WITHOUT moonclips? Or are they required?

                  Required to use moonclips.
But I think it's advantage. Dropping in 8 rounds is fast and easy.

You can, but since 9mm is a rimless cartridge, there's nothing for the ejector rod to catch on so you'll have to poke a pen or similar implement down each cylinder to push out the brass.

Wait. I am confused. Who is telling the truth here?

Anyone have an opinion on how the 929 compares to say, the Ruger Blackhawk with two cylinders: 357/38 & 9mm? I like the idea of 9mm in a revolver. But I checked out the 929 and its a little longer than I think I can get used to.

at least I own one and it requires to use moon clips. S&W will tell you the same. Round goes too deep to have reliable ignition.
previous owner had no clips and thought gun was defective...

In a way, they are both correct.

Rimless cartridge such as 9mm cannot head-space on the rim the way .357 does. It can head-space on the mouth of the cartridge if the cylinder is manufactured correctly AND it's designed only for one cartridge (compare to any .357 firing a .38 - if it weren't for the rim, the .38 would fall all the way into the cylinder.)

929 is manufactured to allow head-spacing on the mouth of the 9mm cartridge, so if you drop rounds in without a moon clip they will stop at the correct distance. More or less. This "more or less" is what can make primer ignition inconsistent. I'm not aware of any 929s that wouldn't head-space correctly without the clips, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were out there.

Also, ejector works exclusively off of rims on rimmed cartridges, so it will just go through 9mm without moving them. You'll have to pull each cartridge out manually. It will be a pain with non-brass cases that expand.

I really enjoy my 929. I use a moon clip loader from BMT and get my clips from Revolver Supply. I use the nickel plated version. My 929 had a great trigger out of the box, but I will lighten it a bit and also get a red dot installed. Most of the guys that own them will tell you it is one sweet shooter. HOWEVER, take a little time and try to buy one from a local retailer to ensure that you get a good one. It took me a while to find mine. By good one, I mean nice fit and finish and that the barrel is clocked properly. Everything that IVC has explained is accurate IMHO.
