Your best bet is the S&W SD9VE.

It's a way better gun than a high point or anything else in its price range.

For $350 you can't go wrong. Not to mention, they're widely available and easy to get. Also, with a few modifications, this gun can be a nail driver. Don't let the price fool you.

S&W was actually sued by Glock over this design. It's essentially a $350 dollar Glock.

    Good luck.

Don't be cheap in HD gun, but expensive guns don't mean they're reliable. Research on the specific models that you're interested in. My carry gun is a $300 Bersa .380 that can outshoot many other more expensive.380 in term of reliability and accuracy.

Sig Saur sp2022 is a reasonably priced basic 9mm
They can be found used at a real good deal.
My brother has one and I like it almost as good as the SIG Classics I own.

I heard someone say that if you modify the trigger, it would be considered premeditation by a prosecutor if you ever had to use it in a self defense situation, is that true ?

I own a Springfield XD 4" .40 S&W. First gun i've owned and i use it for the range and HD. Might be a bit much for HD since i do have a muzzle break on it. Go to the local gun shop and play around with the guns they have.

I'm sorry but in a home defense situation you don't want a hi point. It will slip out of your hands before you can fire.

All defense pistols are inexpensive, BMW I series now that's expensive. It's your life and you get what you pay for.

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

It was for this very kind of sittuation where someone who was recently victom of a crime goes out right away to get a gun. I know how it feels to be robbed also so dont think im just trying to be a jerk. Fact is at this point what this fat gangster kid has done so far to you does not justify shooting him. The fact that you posted it here also will look like pre-meditated murder ,cause now you have announced your gunning for the guy. call the cops ,talk to some neighbors or pals see if you can get some help that way first. get yourself some bearspray or a dry chemical fire extinguisher in case you catch this guy in the act (dont laugh it really works). firearms are for when you are in fear for your life and there is no other option . even more specific here in california you better be double and tripple sure before you pull the trigger if you dont want to see what prison is like. That being said, GLOCK 17.
I must be in the comments section of Mother Jones. I can't help but notice this is the exact same rationale used to justify 10 day waiting periods, registration and virtually every other gun control scheme we have here. It's no one's business but your own if you should or should not have a gun and what your reasons for owning it are. CA voters and politicians have made it the government's business and look where we are now. Bear mace and fire extinguishers? You can use those and let us decide what we should use.

Someone was the victim of a crime and the natural response is to be more prepared to defend against something like that in the future. A simple burglary can put someone's life in danger in an instant. That said, buy the gun and during the 10 day wait, read up on the laws pertaining to self defense and justifiable homicide. Be aware that using deadly force to prevent items being stolen from a truck is unlikely to be seen as necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury. This state does not allow deadly force to be used for protection of property. A few items stolen from a truck isn't worth shooting someone even if it was legal.

Most of the choices were already listed. A Big 5 special Mossberg or Remington 870 is a good choice for HD as well. Factor in ammo, training, range time and a nice flashlight like Streamlight, Nitecore or Surefire. If you're dealing with a thief prowling around at night, a very bright flashlight with a long throw will be an effective way of scaring the crap out of someone and disorienting them to decrease the chance of being able to threaten you.

Invest in some self-defense training, throw thieves a beating.
